I added a tail gate protector from an OEM drop in liner to my tailgate. It makes sliding stuff in and out of the bed easier. I haven't had any issues with stuff catching on the plastic trim and I have the tail gate step..

This should actually be a design defect and a recall, how do you sell a truck you cant use for work. My 17 came with the step and the trim broke off the first time i slid some plywood out the back. total BS

Same issue here. Anyone found a fix for this? Mine has a couple wraps of black tape on each end. I tell everyone its part of the Platinum package!

Nothing wrong with necro-posting if it's informational.

If you're swapping a step tailgate with a non-step one, or vice versa, you have to change the left side body-mounted hinge half too. Wherever you're getting the donor, make sure to get the matching half off the body - actually buy them both just to make sure yer good to go! I think the bolts are T40 Torx but I have lousy memory. Had to learn this the hard way when I bought a step tailgate to replace my 2016 factory non-step. Got it home and it wouldn't mount up. The step tailgate left side hinge is connected to an internal torsion rod that spans nearly the entire length of the tailgate, and the hinge has a kind of a race-track shaped (oval) protrusion that matches a similar shaped recess on the body mounted half of the hinge. I went back to the salvage yard the next morning to buy both hinges just to be sure, and the donor truck was gone - someone bought it for parts. I had to order the hinge from my local dealer who had no idea there was a difference in hinges. Of course he ordered the wrong one but he got it right the second time around. The top trim was also missing from the step assy, so that needed to be ordered too and it was pricey (maybe that's just a living-in-Canada thing). Yeah, when you're buying salvage parts make sure you buy everything that was stuck on it, or near it !!

Ford Canada part no. for the left side body-mounted hinge half with the protrusion on it is FL3Z-99430B39-B.

If you need a replacement right side plastic bushing, it's part no. FL3Z-99430B23-A. Hopefully they are the same numbers in the USA.

Regards,
Garnet
