Default Rattle on startup

I have been experiencing a loud rattle on startup from the engine area of the truck. This typically occurs during cool/cold weather. Does anyone else have this issue or know what the issue is?

The truck is a 2020 3.5 Ecoboost Build date 01/20. Attached is a video for reference.

You must live under a rock? Lol. It's a well documented issue with the gen 2 3.5. Cam phaser rattle.

The phasers were said to be updated essentially “eliminating” that issue on the newer 3.5s from what I’ve heard. You must live under the rock far below me. Prove me wrong and show me these well documented issues please. I have yet to find any for the so called updated designs.

Hey there! I can look into your F-150’s rattle concerns on my end if you’d like. Will you send us a private message with your VIN and dealership info?

Are you able to provide any recalls, tsbs, or examples of others having this issue to help me?

The ML3Z (the "fix" phaser) did not cut in until sometime in 2020 production. What is your 2020 build date?

I agree it is not likely for new designs, but how about instead you prove to us which part number phaser your truck has?

In addition to the several hundred page thread linked above, here is some additional very informative reading material from Ford for you:

Since your truck is likely still under warranty (by age at least) why not stop by your dealer and see what they think ?

I believe I included the build date in the original post, but it’s 01/20. That CSP you referenced is now expired by the looks of it and doesn’t apply to my build date. Where would I find the part number of the phasers I have?

Summary: I think your truck has a HL3Z or possibly older phaser, not the newest ML3Z. Ford thinks the HL3Z is fine but it is not.
How to find if you have HL3Z or older, not sure. More internet research to find what build date those were cut in?

Are you still under powertrain warranty? If you are, just let the dealer take care of it and install ML3Z phasers. For one reason or another, your have a cold start phaser rattle.

From what I remember your build date is not included because sometime into 2020MY they began to use the HL3Z phaser that was in the listed as the "fix" in earlier supplements. I recall that not all 2020MY included the HL3Z part but could be wrong. So some 2020 trucks may have "two revisions" old phasers.

You're right about this bulletin being slightly out of date. I don't think Ford has come to admit yet that the HL3Z are also failing.
My truck had HL3Z installed under warranty work, so I expect they may fail again in the future.
A few members here have reported failures using the HL3Z part that was initially used to repair trucks, before the ML3Z became available.

Starting with Supplement #3 of the doc I provided, Ford was listing the newer ML3Z part that is used starting with 2021MY new build. The mechanical design is very different than the HL3Z/priors. I recently posted a video here showing the details.
