Default Random Transmission downshift

I have a 5.0 2016 SCREW with the 6spd. 2 days ago I experienced the very same symptom as 16S19 https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2016/RCMN-16V248-1933.pdf

i was driving along at about 50 mph and all of a sudden a shudder and the rpms went to redline as the truck slowed a bit. A second or two later it was like nothing happened. I called ford and my dealership. They do not want to help without paying for diagnosing the issue and said likely it won’t be reproduced by their technicians. Has anyone else had this happen on the 2016?

Could it be related to this? At 1:23 it sounds similar to what you described.

Probably so. I was thinking the likely cause is the OSS but didn’t know if anyone else had this happen to them on 2016. This should be a recall imo due to the safety aspect of what happens. Ford needs to own up and make this right before people are seriously injured or killed.

So something else interesting happened today. I was in the drive thru, it was taking awhile so I shifted to neutral and turned the key towards off to shut down the engine. The key of course wouldn’t go the whole way to off. I went to restart the engine (still in neutral) and I got the wrench icon on the dash and the truck seemed confused what to do when I shifted to “D”. Has anyone else been able to so easily confuse this transmission? It seems like the software creators on these things do not look to deeply a possible faults in different use cases.

Either way I’m not getting anywhere with the original issue and it has not reappeared since.

So I have some more information about this issue. I experienced the issue while I had my code reader hooked up. I was able to pull the codes while driving. DTCs P0706 and P0707. After shutting off the truck and rechecking, the codes are gone. From what I’ve been reading, the lead frame needs replaced which contains the range sensor. Makes sense that this could be the resolution? I also read that the range sensor circuit shares power with the camshaft position sensors and if one of those is grounding out, then the range sensor will receive less than desired voltage. Anyone know an easy way to separate these circuits? I think if the camshaft position sensor was bad, i would be experiencing a different set of issues and a p0340 code. Thoughts? Thanks!

So I replaced the battery due to age even though it tested good. Issue still persists. I now have occasional non-start condition as well. I’ve ordered the lead frame and associated parts from ford but they are back ordered until march 5th. This seems like it should be a recall type issue. With only 46k and 4 months past 5 years, will ford cover this under power train warranty? We have had fords all my life. This is disappointing reliability.

How about a timeframe? I don't want to watch nearly six minutes of your dash.

I was hoping to see the truck in action on the road, looks like your gear indicators are all flickering. I would think that would be related to the + gear selector switch flaking out, but, IDK.

My truck flaked out twice during a tow in November during which I was experiencing some TC lockup shudder. Once I recognized the shudder for what it was, I jumped up a gear the remaining 100 miles to reign that in. Nothing serious, just running 3000-3500rpm. Transmission ran 203-208ºF, so no overheating. Without warning, twice during an about two minute period, the engine rpm needle jumped to 5000rpm. The engine sounded like it was running faster, but there was no bump in the truck like you would expect from a sudden unexpected multiple gear jump, and the engine was not as loud as I would expect it to be. At this point, I'm not actually certain the transmission actually changed gears, or at least that it changed as many gear as the display declared (5th to 2nd).

I put some anti-shudder in, no occurrence of either issue since.
