Quick window tinting question
I'm not sure if Illinois does state inspections like Texas but in Texas you can fail state inspection for window film that's too dark.
When I lived in Nebraska there was not annual state inspection so the only time you would get in trouble for window tint was if the LEO pulled you over and made an issue out of it.
With that said Nebraska's and Texas' window tint laws are a little different than Illinois
Illinois only allows 35% on all windows (minus the windshield) - whereas in NE it's 35 on the front and 20 on the sides/back and TX they allow 25% on the front and as dark as you want on the sides/back.
I used to work for a place that did tint and we would always google tint laws if we had people from out of state with questions...this as far as I know is pretty accurate.

After all of that I have my front windows tinted on my truck at 20% and I put 50% on the sides and back just to block the UV rays. As ABolt mentioned the back privacy glass is just smoked so doesn't block UV rays at all. This will help with fading and heat rejection as well as glare.
I've got a friend who has some super light film put on the windshield of his truck - maybe 80% or 85% - really knocks down the glare...but also illegal if the state inspectors were to catch it.

Also - Most tint manufacturers make car tint in 5% (limo), 15%, 20%, 35%, and 50%
Stick with a reputable brand of tint like Llumar or another american made brand.
If you go to the absolute cheapest place they could be using cheap korean made film. It will look great but the dye is not color stable so what will end up happening over time is the film will either turn purple (because the green dye is not color stable) or i've seen it where it turns clear.
$200 is a reasonable ballpark for film for all 5 windows where I live but it varies by state - places where it's more common to do window tint will be cheaper than areas where it's not as common - less competition, etc.

Yes, 20% on the rears over factory tint is pretty dark. I'd hate having to roll the windows down at night just to back my truck up.
Just had my regular cab tinted. 20% on the back glass and 35% on the sides. That's as dark as Missouri law allows on the front sides.
Would I have liked to of gone darker on the sides, you bet!
Would I like to give the popo ANOTHER reason to pull me over when I'm already late for an appointment, going 5-10 over, Nah.

I went with 15% ceramic tint on the sides and back, 45% ceramic on the entire windshield. over 40k miles later and not a single ticket or dead pedestrian.

I would stay with the 35% to be legal even if you feel safe in your local area you just might want to take a trip some where less forgiving. just get a quality film with UV protection. In today's climate you don't want some "Barney one bullet" with a gun wondering whats behind door no. one when you get pulled over on a dark street in the middle of the night.
Well, I haven't been pulled over in over 10 years, but then again, I've never had a twin turbo engine that gets up to over 70 mph from just sneezing on the accelator. I've already gone back and forth with the tinter twice now from 35% to 20%, so you all think I should go with the 35%, being the so-called legal limit? Because I even mentioned the law to him, and he said it fluctuates so much that he doesn't seem to have a problem doing the 20%.
The thing is that between the house and town, there is a 4-lane highway that is only 55 mph, but most people do 65+ on it anyway. And I constantly get up to over 65 on it myself. In fact, as I pull out onto it from our road, in Sport Mode, I get up to 70 in a very short period of time.

35% is pretty light. Of course the guy will do whatever you want. He doesn't get the ticket for illegal tint. You would.
However I will say I've had 20% on the front doors of my vehicles for about the last 15 years and never run into an issue. This being in states where the law states it's supposed to be 35 or higher. I just feel like 35 puts it too see through.

If 35% is legal in your state you probably wont have a problem going 20% in the fronts, its not that much darker.
With that said 20% over the factory will be pretty dark. I went 35% all around (including over factory) and I'm glad I did its just dark enough for my liking but I still have visibility at night. A lot of my friends went darker and it gets pretty hard to see out of the back window at night. I only did a visor on the front window, didn't want to have to pull that off if I ever got "caught"
