Default Problem with 2016 F150

My dad has a 2016 F150 XLT SuperCrew, 5.0L, and he recently went on his first trip with his 20 foot Puma pull behind camper. The camper dry weight is < 5000lbs and they didn't have more than 500lbs of other weight in the truck and on the camper total for their two week vacation.

The left from home, northwest Georgia just south of Chattanooga, and started north to Truxton New York to visit mom's family. They filled up before they left Georgia and the truck had no problems until it got to Pennsylvania. Once they got there the truck would begin to shift strange third to fifth, sixth to third, fourth to sixth, etc. He also started seeing drastic miles to empty changes from the onboard computer. It took a couple of days once they made it to Truxton for the truck to start acting normally again, obviously it wasn't pulling the camper at this point, but once they got back on the road the truck would not get over 58 mph even with the pedal to the floor, but on the way up they were hitting 70+ with no issues and with lots of pedal left and nothing concerning with the RPMs. On one fill up coming back, on empty, the truck only took on 11 gallons of fuel but the gauge showed full.

Other information-
  • Shell midgrade was used on every fill up after they left Georgia, dad always uses Costco fuel around town and beginning of trips.
  • The truck usually gets 18-20 MPG when not towing and got great mileage on the way up to New York.
  • The truck has already had cabin controller changed because of dash lights going out and other problems with dash display.
  • The truck has under 49000 miles.

You need the error codes from the truck, it’s all guessing otherwise

Was tow/haul mode used?

Either way it sounds like a tranny issue but as mentioned it's not easy to diagnose without some error codes.

Tow/haul was used the whole time the camper was attached.

Did you have someone with a scanner check for codes? You "could" have a problem even if the wrench light did not illuminate.

I have a scanner and it didn't find anything. I don't have a nice one though (Bluetooth and Android app).

Well dad's truck went crazy. He was at a red light with his foot on the brake and the truck accelerated it and rear-ended another car.

That’s nuts! Sorry to hear, hope everyone is ok. I’d be interested to hear what ford comes up with.
