I had a 2012 Ecoboost SCREW with 3.73 gears and liked it a lot but, like others, was concerned about long term reliability. I now have a 15 SCAB with the 5.0 and 3.73 and LOVE it. Really missed the V8 rumble and my fuel economy is actually better than I was getting with the Ecoboost. Zero regrets here.

I hate my 5.0. It has 3.31 gears and is an absolute dog. Coming from an Eco with 3.31's it is worthless towing my enclosed. It's only a two year lease and I'm already trying to find a way out of it..

In risk of sounding like an *** but if someone who really cares about performance wouldn't settle for nothing less than 3.73. At the least 3.55.

You having bought two F150 with 3.31 gears means you don't really tow much and you're not all that into driving fast or caring about it.

So... To me it's like someone that is complaining that he bought a bull thinking he could milk it for dairy. The dairy you're hoping to get... well it ain't milk lol.

Rule of thumb is you don't go for tall gearing in any setup for towing. Max towing go for 3.73 or at least 3.55. For light trailer towing a 3.31 is just fine. If you need more then you should have got either he 3.5EB or the 3.73 or both.

Sucks but go trade it in...

My 5.0 with 3.31 tows great, I have never owned an Eco so I'm not expecting that low end out of a relatively small N/A v8. Go pedal is on the right, keep it in 5th or 4th when towing heavy and use tow haul

This is not meant to become another discussion about what engine is better but just a place to share your experiences to help others in future buying decisions. That being said let me start this off. I love my truck the 6-7 months I've owned its been great minus the hiccup I had when installing the Fox shocks. Now that that's been all worked out I've come to a few conclusions after 6000+ miles. I love everything about my truck except for my decision to get the 5.0 over the EB. Ever since I put 34" heavier tires all of what was left of my low end torque is gone. I got 3.73 gears specifically because I knew I wanted bigger tires and I read and heard some horror stories about the EB engines from past owners I talked to so that's why I stayed away from the EB. Now that I've driven it for some time I love the top end giddy up the 5.0 has above 3-4k rpm but I just hate always having to rev for it. Even with the horror stories I've heard firsthand i know now with 100% certainty I should have just taken the risk. I bought a nicer truck hoping to hold onto it for awhile but now I'm not so sure that'll end up happening. The best way I can describe is that the truck either likes to accelerate at 2k rpms slowly or I push on it harder till it drops down a gear and wham it downshifts. It gets kind of annoying having to do one or the other with no in between. I like driving it better in sport mode I just don't like having to switch back and forth from regular to sport mode as it never seems to shift into 6th gear unless your above 65mph and I don't like driving 55 mph in 5th gear all the time. The risk reward doesn't seem to be there when it comes to tuning the 5.0 as the gains aren't anywhere near what the EB can churn out with a tune. My question for others out there is that do you regret any of your decisions having owned your truck for awhile?
I have the same set up on my truck as you except I have a 6" lift and 35's. I don't have regrets on the set up and the truck is always trying to spin the tires on me when I take off. Even when babying it. It's got a lot of power taking off in my opinion but like you said when you are gently picking up speed down the highway at 2k RPM's it doesn't seem to go a whole lot and she doesn't waste any time at all on down shifting. Sometimes she doesn't care to stay in 6th gear either if there's any wind or hills. However it never stops and really with the set up it doesn't seem bogged down like my previous truck. My previous truck was a 2012 fx4 with the 5.0, 3.73 gears, and 35" tires. It always seemed to be hunting gears and never knew which gear it wanted to be in. So my new 15 runs a 100 times better than my 12. If you had chosen the Eco-boost you may not of been extremely happy either because I've heard you wouldn't be allowed to have lower then a 3.55 gear. (I could be wrong and apologize if I am) if this is the case though the gearing alone would put the trucks in about the same boat except for fuel economy until you got a tune on it, and I do agree with you on the fact that I wish you could get much more power from tuning a 5.0 like you do the Eco-boost.

I have the 2.7 eco with 3.31's (2wd), and I'm happy with it. I get great mileage whether in town or on the hwy. The truck fits my needs perfectly.

I don't tow much, but I do haul a decent bit once or twice a week. If I could have changed one thing, I would have gotten the 3.55's in case I go up in tire size, but I'm not sure I would even need it. The 2.7 eco won't downshift unless you make it, and it accelerates quickly with minimal throttle.

Maybe I'm getting old, but a loud truck just isn't appealing to me anymore. Even if I had gone with the 5L, I wouldn't have put exhaust on it. I love the way Ford has made these new trucks so quiet; however, I think that the enhanced engine sound is unnecessary. It doesn't bother me, but it just isn't needed IMO. Yes Ford, I know I have a 6 cyl; you're not fooling anyone… lol!

With small loads it will. Get up there in weight and it does not

7000 lbs no problem. I guess some consider that small.

You are right about the 3.55 gears in the 3.5L Eco but I think the added torque at low rpms would've helped a lot. Also I'd probably invest in a 5star tune with their 100k warranty coverage so the gear ratio while not the best fit, that added extra torque under 2k rpms would make up for it. Until you drive it everyday you don't really know a vehicle and the 5 mile test drive with the salesman doesn't really give you the best flavor of things. Don't get me wrong the engine is a screamer when you floor it but this is what I am talking about. Not sure why Ford wouldn't adjust the camshaft and timing to have a flatter torque curve. Torque is suppose to increase with RPM's not decrease and thats the feeling that magnified with bigger tires.

Kickin myself as I love everything else about the truck I just wish it wasn't as expensive of a fix. I guess I'll hold out for the 2nd Gen Eco they are putting in the Raptor. Hope they include that in the F150 lineup as I don't want to pay the Raptor Premium
