I use Simi-chrome on my '82 Corvette wheels that no longer have clearcoat. They come out beautiful.

Salt kills uncoated aluminum. I ride my Harley in the winter and if I EVER put it away uncleaned after a ride the salt eats the aluminum. Oxidizes and bubbles up in a huge mess.

Uncoated Aluminum looks great, but man it's tough to keep nice.

People not realizing what wheels they have and something makes them look bad. A lot of people would say" look what happened to my wheel". I would almost guarantee it will happen, there's a lot of consumers out there with a lot of different expectations! Just look at some of the threads on this forum.

I guess I need to keep in mind that you do not own a Platinum and put take-offs on your truck. The vast majority of people know what polished aluminum rims are and if they do not they should ask before investing their money. If someone damages their rims because they thought they were something other than what they are I don't see how that would be the manufacturers problem, nor do I see how damage by the owner would be covered under warranty.

As for some of the threads on this forum, ya, it kinda scares me.

That's for sure. I wipe vaseline around the bead line in the winter to prevent salt from getting in behind the bead. Then just give the rims a real good cleaning in the spring.

I wonder how protected they would be if you coat them with a coating i put on my truck the other day. The guy also coated the rims with ceramic pro.

That would certainly help with making it easier to remove brake dust but salt will penetrate anything if left on long enough. I just use Chemical Guys wheel guard (wax) but I have also used Zaino before on my car rims since that stuff will last up to 6 months.

Problem around here is the beat juice concoction they spray on the roads in the winter. That stuff sticks to everything and doesn't wash off easily. Cars are rusting out faster than ever before.

LOL, It doesn't have anything to do with not having a platinum. If I wanted a platinum I would have ordered one and if I did I still would not have asked about the wheels, who would. I never had any dealings with polished aluminum before and I doubt the vast majority of people have! A platinum owner back in February posted that he thought they were coated, I guess he shouldn't have been allowed to buy a platinum since he didn't know. Most manufacturers don't put polished aluminum on from the factory for the reason I stated earlier.

Sorry, didn't mind to offend you. However the reason most manufacturers do not put polished aluminum rims is due to the cost. I apologize for thinking everyone knew what polished aluminum meant, chalk it up to my old age.

I put a set of Platinum wheels on my Lariat and had no idea they are uncoated.
Well, that does not seem to be true for all Platinum wheels.

I searched for this thread to find hints on polishing my brand new 20" wheels.

First, I tried a product that is used to put a mirror shine on aircraft fuselages. Did nothing, the product stayed pink after rubbing the wheel, was supposed to turn black.

So I tried a Collinite Marine Metal liquid polish, no change.

Then a general metal cleaner that is rated to work on aluminum.

Guess what? my Platinum wheels definitely have a clear coat on them, and a tough one at that. I concentrated on one spoke with all 3 products, and I did not faze the coating.

Oh well, I was hoping to put a mirror shine on the wheels. Guess not.
