Payload Package -Ride
Good to know. Do I need it if I get a trailer with a gvwr of 6500 pounds? It's me, my wife, and three kids in the truck. The 6500 includes the available capacity beyond the unladen weight
Depends on what the loaded tongue weight is. Your payload will be reduced by the weights of all your occupants and anything else in the truck.
A typical F150 has a payload capacity (listed on yellow sticker on drivers door frame) of 1,400-1,600 lb. With the HD payload package, my XLT is 2,200 lb.
Typical tongue weight is 10% of trailer weight. For a 6,500 lb trailer that is 650 lb plus you will need a weight distributing hitch - 100 lb. Adding passenger weight of lets say 800 lb to the 650 and 100 and subtracting that from a 1,600 lb payload gives 50 lb left over.
So if those numbers are close to accurate, I would buy the HD payload package.

Payload at 1777 for me with 2.7 tow and max pay load. With the 3.73 gears and 80% in town driving my life time Ave MPG are 19.9MPG. I only have 991 miles on the truck so I'm sure it will go up. I have yet to tow because I want it over 1000 miles before I do that. But a normal tow for me would be a Super Moto in the truck and an ATV in a trailer at the same time or a 17 foot boat with a 90Hp motor on the back with a load of lumber(wood worker).
The ride feels more like a truck to me with tow and pay load.... a little stiffer and I can feel the road more if that makes sense but nothing crazy I like the feel better.
New truck has 18" wheels and my old 2002 5.4 my average MPG was 14.5 on a good week and it had 17" wheels. Great upgrade for me.

1400 with wdh. Seems like it may not be necessary. Or that means we just get a bigger trailer.

With the 18" stock wheels I don't think I'm losing more than a half MPG with my driving. With my old 2002 5.4 my average MPG was 14.5 on a good week and it had 17" wheels. Great upgrade for me.
