Default Options for when your engine is toast

Not quite toast, but $6,000 to fix. Cylinder 1 misfire, compression problems, Coolant is leaking into the cylinder. I didn't catch the whole thing, but they need to remove the cylinder head, resurface stuff, etc. The truck feels just fine, but I don't like the idea of just keep driving it. I wouldn't know if there is a new big problem because the check engine light is always on already. Fix it and hope that NOW--after all that--it will really last for years to come. Fix it and trade on something else. (We also paid $5,000+ for the well-known transmission issue, so the next vehicle won't be a Ford.) Are the other options I'm not thinking of?
Thanks,
Mike Todd

I guess it depends on how many miles are on, its general condition, and whether it would book out to more than the cost of repairs. It may be cheaper to sell it off to salvage and buy another something since "it wont be a Ford"

Most owners are still in old time thinking when engines were much less complex and try to equate to that time frame.
This is no longer true for the huge leap forward in technology complexity and computer control.
What you have to look forward to by keep driving it, is complete loss of the engine, lost Cats on that bank etc forcing you to do something then instead of now.
Rebuilt long blocks are now available for under $5k plus labor to do the change and misc. items to complete the job that will run up the final cost almost double depending on who does it.
Like I said, it's not like old times any longer when long blocks might cost $1200 to 1500, out and in with just the Hood and Radiator removed. In your case the whole Cab has to be raised to get to everything unless taking the whole front of body parts off, as well as the hood.

Good luck.

The truck has 100,340 miles or so. Just over 100K. The analysis and estimate came from a very reputable and advanced auto shop. I'm wondering what that amount of work at Ford might cost. And some dealerships--don't know about Ford or the Ford dealer near me--will make an offer to buy the vehicle after doing all the analysis.

If you get an analysis at a Ford shop,I would guess it would be documented in the system, and lessen the value they might give you on a trade. If your transmission was done in the last couple years, it likely is fixed. If done (prior to the drum update) it likely still has potential issues. And then the phasers. It's all a roll of the dice. Bottom line, do you still like the truck?

At 100k miles and those issues, if you can get a decent price SELL IT! I’m not a filthy rich dude where money is no object but I refuse to start rebuilding what was done at a Ford factory. I’d buy a used new truck with half those miles and a warranty and let someone else take the outrageous depreciation of buying new. My 2017 has been good but it will be my last Ford product after many many years of buying nothing but Ford trucks. I honestly think Ford screwed the hell out of everyone with their 10 speed (not ready for prime time) transmission. Ford immediately started out with deny, deny and deny there were serious 10 speed problems. There’s no way those trannies should now be failing at only 100k miles imo unless severely abused. Oh sure supposedly they fixed the problems but what about the hundreds of thousands/millions of the Ford buyers BEFORE they fixed the issue? How about some of the other serious issues that have developed with the 3.5 tt engine like mine? I’ll drive mine until well known major issues creep in and then BINGO it’s gone.....

If you do decide to dump it without repairing it, you better at least figure out and fix why the engine light is coming on.

Lol... have you not seen whats going on with other manufacturers? Toyota boys are crying about their engines
im seeing GM trucks less then 6 years old everyday on rust control pages with entire frame sections being replaced... imagine not even have paid off your truck the frame rots through. My wifes new equinox with 7400km (brand new) vibrates at 1900rpm horribly sounds like you have gravel in the doors, dealer has no idea why, or Gms stop engine sales... lets not even get started on rams quality issues....

Going off like ford like makes a bad truck.

IMO, just because others also do, does not mean it is ok. That is the problem with today's society, zero accountability at every level. Sorry for rant, not directed at any individual, just discouraged what today's generation accepts, and does so at high dollar repercussions.

I agree fully my 2019 XTr 5.0 has rattles knocks. Sucks oil. Shifts odd ect...but i got a coworker with a 2 year old chevy that when his 4x4 is engaged if he turns his over head console light on, his 4x4 disengages, they still havent fixed it.. and his truck already ticks really bad.

i remember when people cursed the 5.4 over a spark plugs getting stuck 🤣🤣🤣 simpler times
