Open diff upgrade options
Do you guys know if it’s a 31 spline? And could someone with decent mechanical skills and normal tools tackle it with little chance of screwing it up, or is this one of those jobs that a pro should do?
Thanks for that info. I’ve tried to look at every thread discussing upgrades for my diff but I don’t see a consensus on what can be done to it.
I’m surprised that both the dealer and the 4WD Parts franchise guys here don’t know either.
It sounds like the Detroit Truetrac LSD is the way to go. I don’t know how to do it but I’ll find someone who does know.

Is 'TrueTrac' a Torsen-type differential? That's the only one I'd consider, due to no wear parts, and almost instant response. But have 2 questions: How easy is the swap with a 9.x axle? And what do you do about the lock feature to avoid codes, etc? Oh, and about how much the whole thing costs? Thx.
No...Torsen style is was different from a limited slip style. The Mustang Torsen has no provisions for c-clips so it can’t work in a Super 8.8. Not sure what’s all out there for the 9.75 as far as Torsen but Detroit does make a TrueTrac for it. No codes are thrown from eliminating the e-locker.
Cost will depend on what you can do on your own but setting up a diff isn’t for a beginner.

But before you swap carriers you'll probably have to take the new one somewhere to have the bearings pressed on.
Would changing from an open differential to a LSD interfere with the traction control operations? For someone shopping for a truck who can't really picture situations where he would engage the locker it seems like a better idea to omit the option and put in a LSD with the money saved later if needed. I haven't driven these trucks in the snow or slick roads; would LSD be better or worse than not having it? Is the traction control better?

I'll probably never use the e-locker, so much prefer an LSD, like others. But seems like a lot of work, and don't trust any shops where I live, so will just leave things alone. In addition, only a Torsen LSD is appealing to me, since it should last the life of the vehicle, and engages basically instantly by design. No clutches/plates/springs that fail at some point.
So, once again, I read that there is essentially no upgrade I can do to my Super 8.8 open diff. Is there even an OEM Trac Loc available? If there’s nothing I can do to make it better then I’d have to get a different truck, and that’s not an option right now.
