OEM LEDs Installed!
Hey guys/gals,
I know there are threads about this, but I decided to post up for the hell of it and if anyone was looking to do the same or had questions, especially since some new wiring harnesses are coming out now.
So after having OEM HIDs on my last F150 and previous sedan, the stock halogen lights on my 16 XLT (purchased in July) just did not cut it.
I looked around and picked up a set off Ebay for ~800, then picked up a couple of ballast and ballast screw from Tasca to complete the lights.
For wiring, I used Raptor Retrofits since I have had success using them in the past and Dawson is very accessible and honest. He informed me that the auto-on and DRLs would not work, but they were working on a new harness to fix that issue..... well low and behold he later informed me that these new harnesses were being finished up and he could drop ship me a set in the hopes to maintain all functionality with headlights. So w/ everything purchased I was out ~$1300... meh oh well...
Install was fairly straightforward, I really did not have directions to go by, but past experience and common sense assisted me. Ford did a great job of including an insane amount of bolts to keep the headlights in, so any burglar may be dissuaded by the pure ridiculousness of headlight removal lol... The most challenging part is getting the 10mm bolt that is recessed on the inside of the light, was hard to get an extension to link up and ended up just finagling my arm/hand in and turning it a 1/16 turn at a time...
Also, you'll need to mount the relay harness and resistor to the frame, so I tapped in as out of the way as possible. It is much easier on drivers side since the passenger side has the windshield washer fluid there. You will see the locations I chose in the attached pictures. Last thing I did was zip tie the extra wiring and connections together so that they did not flop around and beat against the frame.
Once installed the lights looked fine until I cranked the truck and the flicker started. I figured the harness was not quite right or the resistor was not doing its job. Contacted Dawson and he was getting information to transfer on, but since that night they have not flickered? That was earlier this week. So not sure if the lights just needed to warm up or what, but has been awesome besides that first test.
Also, auto-on and DRLs have functioned as they are supposed to. I believe the DRL may just run as low beam during the day, since I see no difference in output of light when trying to compare. But there has been no lights cutting off or not working as designed as mentioned in previous editions of the conversion harness.
Picture time!
