Default New key microchip question!

Needless to say I broke my truck key my dealer cuts keys for free so my question today is if I buy this exact key replacement have them cut it for free and then swap the (non activated chip in the new key) with the chip from this key will it work? Just wondering if the actual metal part of the key has anything to do with the vehicle knowing what I did. I have a normal flip key as a spare but this is my main key and I really don’t want to pay a dealer price for a key

The only thing the keyed metal does is engage the tumblers to unlock the ignition cylinder. If you place the old chip close enough so the pickup antenna can communicate with it, the new key will work.

Your plan should work. Looks like you got the transponder out of the old key. Hopefully the new one is removable too and you can make the swap.

You could use the old transponder, but why don't you just program your new transponder key to the truck after you get it cut? They can be ordered, and are normally pretty inexpensive.

that is exactly what I bought! The reason I need to swap the chips is this broken key is my only key besides my 1 flip key meaning I can’t program a new key without first having two working keys

I guess I don't see why you're not able to program a third transponder key using the original flip key and the broken transponder key.

The truck doesn't care which key you place into the ignition and turn, only which key it's communicating with. Just make sure you've got the head of the keys you don't want to truck communicating with wrapped in a faraday cage during programming. Use the new cut transponder key as a stand in for the broken key, using it to cycle the ignition but blocking the transponder signal. Place the head of the broken key against the steering column so the truck will read that one while you do (since it's already programmed to the truck). Then remove the faraday cage from the head of the new cut key during the step to program it to the truck.

Unless I'm mistaken, and you're saying you need both the original flip keys to program new replacement keys.

How’s you manage that?

Broke a jackknife syle key for my 2013 Fusion. I ordered a new one from the dealer, but am starting to think it might not be a bad idea to get a third one for both vehicles. Don't know where I could get it cut and how much of a deal to re-program

It has been 4 years so I forget the part number, but for a straight blade key, look up StratTec and find the blank key model for your vehicle. The radio frequency should be the same as documented in your owners manual As good lock smith should be able to order it and cut the metal blade using your current blade as a template. You then follow the directions in the owner's manual about how to add another key to your ECU - usually involves turning the OEM key in the ignition back and forth a few times, removing, and then putting in the new blade key and doing something similar. Plenty of google explanations for particular model as I remember.

I use the blade key exclusively as 'jacknife key' was wearing holes in my pockets. No remote start.
