New APIM i guess?
have a 17 that has been having the most annoying issues with the damn sync3. It's basically ALWAYS unresponsive to button input and is insanely slow. The backup camera works and switches fine, but the actual menus and everything else are utterly unusable.
Software updates have zero impact on it, resets have zero impact on it. So, it's busted isn't it?

Almost certainly, yes. If you're still in warranty, take it in. It may have set a code which the dealer can use to justify replacement... if not, they can install firmware that will set codes, then replace it.
A forum member offered me to hook me up with a new one for $400, already programmed to your VIN. Mine is still under warranty for 1.5 years more, but even if it craps out during warranty, I'd probably just get a new one from him. HATE dealers
. So far, it only left me without nav, radio, or bluetooth just once, which is a lot worse than just being slow. I finished updating both the software (to the latest build 19205), and the latest maps (1.18). Is yours up to those too? You can do it via USB, like I did. Hopefully that will cure the problem, but I'm not that optimistic. We'll see.
Finally, do you know what's involved in physically replacing the APIM? Somebody said it was attached to the back of the screen, but also read it's behind the rear seat, by the sub-woofer. Which is it? And may I ask you at how many miles/time it started giving you problems? Thx.

It works perfectly now. It took about 15 minutes for me to replace it myself. Very easy.

If you have the PremiumCare Extended Warranty it should be covered. I've got a '16 Lariat Screw and my APIM went bad. My PremiumCare Warranty from Ford covered the replacement, albeit after 3 visits to the dealer. Even though I told them what the problem was, they still had to go through their protocols before they replaced it! However, it was replaced.
If it's laggy & unresponsive putting a new update on it will not help. It's a known issue with bad hardware; I had mine replace under warranty with one month left. There is a forum member here that may be able to help, Lucas8888
