Default Need Catch Can?

I recent purchased a 2020 with the 3.5. I have read mixed articles about needing, and not needing an oil catch can. I read the the 2020 doesn’t need it, so now I want to hear from the forum members.

You need to think this through a bit.
You may or may not benefit from installing one based on your reason for doing so.
A. Understand that turbo charging results in very high cylinder pressures to get the power the motor is able to produce.
B. This also results in more blow-by the rings pressurizing the crank case higher.
C. This can blow more oil mist through the PCV system into the intake manifold.
There-in lies the reason to consider a Can, if you inclined to do so.
Is it a necessity... no if it causes no issue.
Is it worthwhile to catch any oil; your position on that. Depends on how well the rings seal.
At this point you have nothing to warrant putting a Can on except opinion.
I gave you facts behind a possible reason not saying Yes or No.
Good luck.

I run one on my 17 F150, 5.0, & on my 14 GT500.
On the 2020 + GT500's Ford supplies one..

Ford sells one. I use one on my 5.0 and drain it monthly. I use one on my Harley also.
Everyone on here says it's a waste of money, and it may be. But spraying oil into your intake cannot be good in my mind.

Ford's DI 3.5 eco engines don't appear to have valve coking issues due to an engineered-in valve reversion process. Your truck has port injection and DI so it is even less likely to have the issue.

Do you need a catch can? No. Will it hurt anything as long as it is properly maintained? Not likely.

I chose to not add one to my DI only 2015 3.5 eco after doing my research. It's one more item that requires routine maintenance, which can cause issues if not properly maintained or if collected water freezes and blocks the system. It's an admittedly small risk but it's real.

I'm another catch can non-user. It's short trips that do not fully warm the engine that does the most damage. Good oil that has low evaporation, good fuel, running till fully warmed up, that do the most to keep the engines clean. Just pulled all the intake sensors this summer nearing 60000 miles on a 2017 2.7 EB, the only dis-colored one was in the manifold (and cleaned right up), the throttle butterfly was clean on both sides and the only oil was a very light coating in the CVF intercooler. What bothers me with catch cans is the potential for freezing the condensate in cold weather, my truck is never garaged and it get cold in WI.KM

1. No, you don’t need one
2. It only has the chance to “help” if maintained (no negatives)
3. Up to you if the cost is worth the small benefit
4. Guys that don’t have them will spend every last breath telling you are dumb for spending $150 on something that has nothing to do with them.

The good thing about this thread vs what you've already learned, you'll definitely get a straight answer!
