Default Need a 2nd Key?

Hi,
I was wondering how does one go about getting a 2nd replacement key?(truck only came with one) I called the dealership and they quoted me $194 just for the key, excluding cut and programming! I think that's to much for just a key. I'm planning on buying a key from amazon for like $55.

Would the cheapest way be to get a local blacksmith to cut it and program it? I read that ford charges like $170 to program.

Can someone share similar experience and whats the best way to go about it.

I think you need two original keys to program any more yourself, otherwise if you only have one, you'll have to pay whatever Ford is charging. Every locksmith I've asked has said they are not able to program keys, only cut them.

You can certainly buy a $55 amazon key though. I kinda did the same thing. I got a plain transponder key and programmed it myself using my original two keys.

Not sure about the 17's, but the older ones can be done using Forscan and 1 key. Did my neighbors 2011 with only one key and Forscan.

I'm pretty sure you really wanted to get at least the two factory original keys with that used truck, because you need two admin keys (not mykey keys) to make a new key. Once you have two admin keys you can buy one on ebay/amazon for $55-$75 and program it yourself. Might have to take the dealer hit. Call multiple dealers. Don't go by "I read that Ford charges", call up some dealers.

You will need at least two master keys to program any new keys yourself. With only one key you can't program new ones on your own without software. Call or check some local locksmith websites, good locksmiths that do high end cars usually have the software to do fords as well.

I'm doing the same thing, mainly because I don't like the feel of the flip out fob key on my 2017. I'll end up hanging the fob off of the transponder key, so it feels more like the keyset from my old Explorer.

Sorry that you got screwed over by whoever sold you the vehicle, many people here have had the same thing happen to them. So I'm going to try to shout out a warning that the forum search engine can find.

PEOPLE, DO NOT BUY A VEHICLE WITH ONLY ONE PROGRAMMABLE KEY OR FOB. YOU WILL PAY THE PRICE!!

That being said, we have to realize that this was done so that your friendly valet, mechanic, significant other!! etc., can't borrow your truck and make themselves their own key.

Oh yes, I am fully behind Ford requiring two admin keys to make a copy. We don't want any and every person we let drive the vehicle to be able to make a key. Requiring two admin keys at once makes a ton of sense. It just sucks if you buy a used vehicle that only has one because you'll have to pony up

I have a Lariat, and I only had one key. I bought an OEM new key on eBay for $60 and took it to a locksmith and paid them $80 to program and cut it.

Iirc, they (locksmith) can clone the key, but it’s not the same as having 2 ford-programmed keys. This means you likely can use those 2 to program a third yourself. You will have two “driver 1” fobs as opposed to a 1/2
