Is it necessary?
Changing out the transmission filter. I have high mileage but don't want to do a flush on it. Needs the fluid changed since I'm overdue. They claim it's a lifetime filter but ideally people still change them, just wondering if it's recommended to do so or just change the fluid out. 380K kms on the transmission.
You have 380k km on a stock 10r80 with no maintenance?
As for your question, the filter is 60$ and you'll be cracking open the transmission anyways so I don't see how it could hurt. I take issue with this notion of "lifetime" filters

His signature shows a 2016, which we know is a 6r80 and not a 10r80.
Just about to take my F150 up to my local fix-it auto shop. 75000 on it first service was a filter and flush (BG) at 40000. Filter I requested as I wanted all the factory and early wear particles out. Today the filter will not be changed just flush and fluid. Never bought into the long service life of fluids and rather swap out before any trouble starts. KM
Last the system showed for transmission was around 260K, which my ex at the time would have got done. Was just curious as to what some of you guys on here normally do. I've read some just draining and refilling while others drop the pan and filter.

If you're draining you're dropping the pan since the factory pan doesn't have a drain plug. And since you're there why not change the filter since it's going to probably come off when you drop the pan.
That's fair. I'll ask the shop to see if they get OEM filters from Ford. The shop will be doing my pinion seal as well as a drain and refill on the rear differential. He said he will order the seal from Ford and doesn't want to use an aftermarket one. Made me happy to hear.
I take my truck to a shop for trans service. I'm 73 and rent so just a single garage for my wife's car. A good look into the work needed, poor access to drain, check, or fill, I decided to use the BG service. Simple tap into the cooler lines, add flush, follow with fresh fluid all 13.5 quarts. First time a pan drop and new filter went in as posted, today I know it had full fresh fluid and filter 35000 miles ago so just new fluid. As long as it's in a shop I trust and on a lift anyway, I'll get the engine coolant done and everything checked out. Got a long road trip in May coming up another 6k mile trip out west again!
