The problem is with the wait IMO. There's no way you can avoid oil contamination with just 24 hours of draining. Not even close. That's the main problem, but lack of prep could be an additional one as well; it has to be done right. And yes, having the same material (aluminum in this case) minimizes risk of future leaks. Glad Ford changed that before my truck was built. I'm surprised Ford is not calling a longer drain time after so many failed attempts; they must know it needs more, even if it's more 'inconvenient'. But owners can always use the lemon law (where available). It'd be utterly stupid for Ford having to buy back a vehicles just for that stupidity, but maybe that's what needs to happen to avoid any further inconvenience for affected owners.

After than much effort fixing I'd have already done it myself.

well if this is a real situation your dealer service group needs to re-read some training and or hire someone with a brain.

Of repeat pan failures I have seen a few different issues that that could cause problems.

1) tech over torques or doesn't set the torque for thepan bolts. It is not very high and despite the idea stop the leak - less is more in this case. with the 2.7L you have an iron block and a plastic pan and a steel bolt with thread lock (again if they use the proper kit). thus tighten too much and the pan will give under the bolts - warping a bit and getting the sealant out of sorts.

2) like the factory install - too little sealant used on the bead

3) lack of proper cleaning. as mentioned above.

Amazingly the first one happens quite a bit and this is when you see them trade out your pan. Normally the pan is fine - the sealant used was not set right. proper clean and new sealant, proper torque on the bolts and bickety bam - problem solved.

You have a part# for the new metal oil pan? I'd buy one if mine leaks again.....

Which 3.5 eco? the standard 3.5 or the HO version in the raptor. IIRC that raptor mill is a different engine and has the same graphite iron block you find on the 2.7L and is still a plastic pan.

I've not been under one so I can neither confirm nor deny at this point. I will say this - specific to the 2.7L and the graphite iron block I absolutely would not ever want an AL oil pan on that engine. Unless it had a removable plate gasket - with some insulator. Because of dissimilar metal corrosion issues.

My new Plat 3.5EB has a metal pan, which was great news. But wanted to order a magnetic drain plug, and NOBODY lists a metal drain plug/crush-washer for a 2018. And it's supposedly been installed since March. Does anybody have an idea which size bolt/pitch it uses? NOt even on Ford parts websites shows up. Weird. Thanks.

I’m on my 3rd pan and I think it’s finally been fixed correctly. They kept it several days and made sure it drained completely, cleaned correctly, and new seal had time to cure. Fingers crossed. 16’ 2.7 with 32k.

2.7 is listed as single use oil pan. anytime it comes off ford says to toss it and replace.

My '16 2.7L is going in tonight for the 4th time. They've replaced 2 pans and tried re-sealing one...To no avail. Issue has been going on from 18-26k miles.

Is it out of line for me to ask FORD for a warranty extension ?
