Default Muffler Configuration?

I'm looking for a muffler for about $100 but I'm not sure what I need to know in order to select one. I've decided on Magnaflow, and I want to keep installation simple so I think single in / single out. What I'm not sure of is if I need to be concerned about center/offset in/out. I crawled under my truck and it looks like it is offset to the same side for both the in and the out.

If I go to Magnaflow's website and search by the truck, it only lists full exhausts (I didn't go further than that). If I search by muffler and select offset/offset same side, the only parts they have are 2.5 inch pipe.

So I'm assuming that if I go Magnaflow, I'll have to select either center / center or center/offset.

What overall length do I need?

I listed to a few Youtube videos and really liked the sound of this one (14326):
but it has 2.5" pipes. I'm also concerned that I don't get the "real" sound seeing as though it was recorded on a phone and I'm listening through cheap computer speakers.

There's this one (12249)
that sounds better than stock, but didn't really seem to be much louder than stock. I do want it louder, but I don't want to be annoyed in the truck and I don't want to be annoying to others on the road. But damn, the stock exhaust on this truck just sounds wimpy.

So no one knows what type of muffler in/outs I need? Or does it just not matter?

see post #9 on this thread - it's from the magnaflow rep - you could probably PM them if you had more questions

I apologize in advance, you won't like this.

I love the sound of my V8 - my Lariat makes a crazy sound in the cab when I boot it, but I'm beginning to despise the sound made by somebody's noisy truck almost as much as I think the sound of a Harley with open pipes defines a moron.

Maybe that's why there used to be a Harley pickup, the same mentality that thinks we should all be deafened by some nimrod's ride would buy the pickup? Or maybe because the natural habitat of the Harley is the back of a pickup? I digress; when you choose your aftermarket exhaust, try and think of your neighbours who are trying to enjoy their existence in relative quiet. I would be VERY surprised if anyone ever leaped to their feet and said "listen to that! A Ford with no muffler!" much the same as they might get all excited over the sound of a Lamborghini... a lot of us who like the sound of machinery think loud pipes are just pollution.

I knew you wouldn't like it.

You forgot "and stay the hell off of my grass. Damn kids!"

In good humor sir. I don't disagree with you.

Thanks for the assistance, I've requested the 12249 as my Christmas gift this year.

I'm with you, I love the sound of my truck in the when I get on it. But I hardly ever get on it because I baby the throttle. I want it to sound good more often.

I hate being behind a rice burner with a fart cannon. The last thing I want is for someone else, especially my neighbors, to have to listen to my truck.

About 10-15 years ago, I was watching TV and there was a commercial with a V8 Mustang on it. It sounded phenomenal. I knew then that I wanted a V8. I got up, walked out to the garage and looked at my dad's convertible '67 455 Firebird (engine swap) just rotting away. I told my dad that weekend, "We need to fix that car."

He said, "You fix it, you can have it."

So I fixed it, and true to his word he signed it over to me. About a year later he told me he regretted not fixing it up. Since then, however, I've signed it back over to him as I had to move out of state and couldn't take it with me. Unfortunately, it's rotting back in the garage again.

Ever since then I've wanted a V8 and I wanted it to sound as good as that Firebird when I was done with it. When I bought my truck a few months ago, I drove it to work and a buddy asked me to crank it up and rev it a few times. The sound just wasn't there. It didn't make me grin. I wasn't happy and I had signed the papers just a couple hours before.

A few years ago my wife wanted to buy a Mustang. She was set on a 2010 auto v6. I was behind her on it, willing to cosign, but I asked the salesman, "What can you do for us on a '09 v8?" She wanted the V6, but I convinced her to at least crank the V8 even though it was a manual. When she heard the engine roar to life, her eyes nearly came out of her head. She was sold. Immediately.

That's what I want the sound of my truck to do for me. I finally got my own V8 now, and it doesn't sound any better than my V6 Frontier did nor my Spec V before that. I don't need it to wake neighbors or impress (**** off) the guy next to me in traffic. I just need it to make me like it.

Nice story about the Firebird.

The v8 honks inside the cab when you boot it to pass but it is a bit shallow outside. At least you won't annoy the old farts with their cocktails!

What's that old bumper sticker? Keep honking, I'm reloading? Sort of has a nice feel to it.

Whatever muffler you buy make sure you don't get a lot of resonance while at cruising speed, it will drive you up the wall on long trips.

I prefer my truck to be quiet. If I want sound I drive my car (in my signature), you should have kept the Firebird!
