I didn't pick the husky because of the protective tape application and then the weather tech ones came with protective tape, lol.
I see. Cutting the fasteners would not be a big deal. That is funny on the tape. I guess they both must really need it!

I was thinking about getting a sheet of it and applying it, the strips that came with the flaps were no bigger then 1/4 inch wide and about 4 inches long

That sounds very similar to what is included with the Husky flaps. They were small, about 4-5" long and maybe 1' wide at the widest part, and tapering down to about 1'4" at the narrowest. I had a hard time peeling them off and separating them from the backing, and lining them up. The flaps were a piece of cake to install, but that tape was a headache for me, and very frustrating. I ultimately got them applied correctly (I believe), but did not enjoy that part. I will say, they fit dead-on perfect. Only the slightest, very uniform gap where they line up along the edge of the body, and are tight enough that you would think they were stock if you didn't know the difference. The pics I have seen of other's Weathertechs seem to fit very tightly as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either, and I like the no drill aspect of both brands/models.

Installed Weather Techs today... I like how they don't wrap around the side of the flare like the OEM ones... just makes less opportunity to hold dirt and grit. I did install the protective film behind them. The rears are a bit of a pain to mount (getting the lower bolt to line up with the hole in four layers of parts)... Otherwise pretty slick design.

I followed majority opinion here and went with Weathertechs. I'm not experienced but the install was straight forward.
