Morimoto XB Headlight Install - 2 Questions 1 Problem (Halos not working)
#261
I talked to them about the fitment issues yesterday through facebook messenger. They basically said they are from China, what do you expect? And probably won't ever get resolved. China manufacturers are known for this, and there isn't anything they can do about it. I was actually appreciative of the honesty, but...damn haha. Maybe I'll buy these six months down the road if the issues all get worked out. If not, i'll keep looking.

Zymic - got your PM, will call you either later today or tomorrow. Thanks for the PM.

Edit: TRS and Umnitza are stepping up and taking care of this

I would recommend that anyone who hasn't purchased yet, or who is awaiting shipment, take a wait-and-see attitude with these headlights.
There are probably 2018+ XB headlights out there that are fine. The problem is that it will take hours to install and then uninstall these headlights if they aren't, in fact, fine. For what they cost, the quality control should be much higher (compare these XB headlights to what Toyota charges for Tundra OEM LED headlights, for example).
Furthermore, the XB headlights (as currently shipped) do not live up to Morimoto's/TRS' own claims about them. Let's review:
Some of these headlights (including one of mine) are literally not fitting into the trucks correctly, while the OEM headlights fit perfectly. If Morimoto's stance on this ranges from (publicly) "OEM Plus...far superior to everything else out there" to (allegedly privately) "They're built in China...what do you expect?", well...I suggest they pick one. But they can't have it both ways. (Edit: It was apparently Stage 3 that made the "built in China...what do you expect?" comment, not Morimoto/TRS) This inspires absolutely no confidence for those receiving replacement headlights, either, since those, too, might have the same manufacturing issues, resulting in yet more hours wasted installing and removing them. There is nothing "OEM Plus" about this.
The above paragraph should be full of asterisks. It has already been established in this thread that for trucks with OEM halogen headlights, the XB headlights are not plug-and-play if you want the DRLs to function correctly (and this is true of both the 2015-2017 and 2018+ headlights). You will have to run a fuse tap, and you will also have to rewire the connectors on the headlights themselves. And if you don't want the supposedly non-existent radio interference, you will have to install an additional wiring harness (not included), which again belies the patently false plug-and-play claim.
Finally, I would recommend that if you do decide to purchase these anyway, go straight to the source at Morimoto/TRS, rather than through a "value-added reseller." It is easier to hold the seller accountable when they are also the guarantor of the warranty. Edit:Umnitza and TRS and both working on a resolution for my situation.
I say all this as someone who has been happy with Morimoto products in the past, but finds many of the claims about these new headlights misleading at best, bordering on fraudulent at worst.

I’m supposed to receive my XB LEDs for my 2016 today from TRS. They said they’d come with the RFI modules. I’ve been watching this thread for a few weeks and I’m natually concerned, but it sounds like most of the fitment issues are isolated to 2018+ trucks. True, or false?

As someone who went through the frustrations with these headlights, I was able to get them resolved and although I did not buy directly through TRS, they did stand behind their product and worked with me through all my issues in a timely manner. Yes, I agree that some of the claims are misleading but for me, I generally don't expect aftermarket parts to have the fit/finish of OEM... but admit this was more than I expected.
It seems that TRS is not the manufacturer of these headlights and are going through a 3rd party and that they have some agreement to exclusively license/distribute under the Morimoto name. These guys seem to be the Taiwanese manufacturer of these headlights: https://www.coplus.com.tw/headlights-f150-2015. You'll also find the same Morimoto tail lights on their site: https://www.coplus.com.tw/tail-lights-f150
Also, regarding the FM interference issue, TRS informed me that some units did not come with the appropriate harness. Suggest that you check by unscrewing the computer and seeing if it has the harness that I posted in a previous post before installing. You may find that you already have the harness to prevent FM interference issues...

I want to thank you guys - early adopters - for contribution. Threads like this make this forum shine. It is great to see practical advises and thoughts.
I'm yet to install the XB headlights (mine are amber halos) and inputs in this thread make me feel more confident jumping into this exercise, knowing most of the caveats and checkpoints.
Many thanks to all who sacrificed their time to write about their experience!

Im VERY PICKY and the 2018+ Morimoto XB headlights are a solid 9.5/10 in my book.
I wouldn't let any of these fitment issues discourage you from buying. If I wouldnt have read it on this forum, I wouldn't have ever noticed it. Mine MIGHT be a big enough gap you could fit a quarter through.
