Map Updates Fails with BGMAP_ERR01
I get the BGMAP error right after plugging in the USB with the map update files and license file. Three different calls to Ford didn't solve the problem. Going to my dealer didn't solve the problem. I did a full wipe (not just delete) of the USB and re-loaded it, and got the same error. On the same USB a day earlier, I had done a successful SYNC3 update. So I have $100+ of software I can't install.
Sadly, they seemingly do not. Great trucks, not so great tech support. ACool came to the rescue. He PM'd me the fix and i corrected the problem this afternoon. All good now aside from lingering frustration that Ford can't support Sync that well.
Sadly I have also run into this issue. Have been fighting with the local dealer and the 1-800 support for MONTHS now. Case was immediately escalated after trying a pile of stuff, but after 5 weeks I still haven't received an update and if I call them back, they just say it's been escalated and to be patient. Right. Will ping ACool for the fix, fingers crossed!
I had same problem with the Navigation update. Apparently pulled the USB out a bit too soon. That is what BGMAP_ERR01 error usually indicates--according to the internet and the support person that I spoke with. Before calling the support line, I had found some info on YouTube. His remedy was to
1. General system Factory reset in the Settings menu
2. After that, perform (2) hard reboots in a row. A hard reboot is hold the power button and "next track" button until screen goes black. It then comes back on. He was very specific that this must be done twice. So, I did that
3. Then, put the USB back in and restart the process.
I reinserted the same USB stick. System started to update. I got the message the first portion was complete. Then, did I want to proceed? I said continue. Got the BGMAP_ERR01 error message again, but then got a message that said update was in progress. So, I let things run for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Pulled the USB out and got the BGMAP_ERR01 error message again. During the hour and 15 update, I was driving around with the Navigation system up. The maps looked different. They seemed to have more details and had some road changes (traffic circles, etc.) that I don't remember seeing on other trips. So, the update may have been there, even though I had gotten the error message, but I digress.
The real interesting part. I called the number on the screen.800.392.3673 after I had taken the 1 hr 15 minute drive and still had the error message. Got someone that knew of the error. They had me go to the vehicle and start it. Then, very specifically had me:
1. Turn off vehicle
2. get out of the vehicle,
3. with the driver's door open, use the manual lock button (NOT THE REMOTE) to lock the door
4. Close the door
5. Wait 2 minutes--very specific about the time
6. get back in vehicle, and start the truck
7. Then we went to settings, General, About SYNC, and checked the Navigation software update version. It had the updated version. I don't know if the software updated from the first attempt or the second. I am guessing the 2nd.
Also, I am guessing the craziness with the door lock was needed to overcome the internal BGMAP_ERR01 error so that the correct Navigation version could display
It just happened that I had taken a picture of my SYNC version to verify that the SYNCMYRIDE zip file had the correct number of files for my model year truck and SYNC version.
The picture happened to capture the Navigation version of "2 20". The new version is "2 21" which is now displaying. So, i had the updated Navigation files, even though I was still getting the BGMAP_ERR01 error.
A note about the update files themselves:
For my 2018 and SYNC 3.0 the SYNCMYRIDE zip file was supposed to have 7 files. Then you have to paste the license file into the SYNCMYRIDE file for a total of 8.
Pasting the license file into the SYNCMYRIDE zip file was a step that I had initially missed. So, the first attempt to update got the error code LST_ERR05.

Yesterday I updated the SYNC3 software in my 2016 Platinum with no problems. Then I bought a map update, downloaded it and have tried installing it half a dozen times with different changes, and still get the error message "Error Code: BGMAP_ERR01".
I have tried re-downloading the software, re-formatting the Flash drive with a complete erase and more. Early on, I disabled the auto engine off in the truck and renamed the flash drive to SyncMyRide which had not been necessary for the Sync3 update. I also talked to three different people at Ford who were of no help. One told me I had to use Stuffit instead of Winzip to unzip a Zip file on a Mac and that was really stupid. (But I haven't tried that.) I have also tried both of the USB ports in the truck. One Ford rep told me I had to use the one on the driver's side, but yesterday the Sync3 update worked using the other one.
The only guy at my local dealer who can help with this is on vacation so any suggestions would be welcome.
