Unless you're in a tunnel or underground your phone will acquire a GPS signal anywhere in CONUS. Yes, it will know that provided the maps are predownloaded.

Wow I didn't realize the phone picked up a GPS signal, or is it the truck that pics it up? How does one download the maps? Sorry but I am unfamiliar with all this. Can you point me to where I can read up on it. Thanks for your help.

We use these offline maps all the time when we're traveling to places where we won't be able to get a cell data signal, and they work very well (just like the maps in a standalone GPS unit). With Google, though, you need to be aware that they expire after 15 days, after which time they must again be downloaded. So don't download then three weeks before you need them, or you'll be unpleasantly surprised...

Smartphones have had gps since the first ones I think. All your photos will have location data inbeded in them unless you opt out of that.
