Default Looking at Getting a 5.0...

Greetings, everyone!

I had a 2011 F-150 FX4 with the ecoboost motor that gave me nothing but problems. I swore off getting another ecoboost after the thousands of dollars we put into that motor trying to get it to run correctly before I sold the truck. I'm going to be in the market for a 5.0 in a few months and wanted to see if there are any tips of what to avoid or look for in a '15-20 F-150? How many miles are too many miles on a used f150 with the 5.0? My non-negotiable in a f-150 are:
  • Crew Cab
  • Back-up camera
  • Leather
  • Heated seats
  • 5.0
  • 4x4
I average between 15-20k miles a year driving, so a truck with too high of mileage won't last long. I do plan on buying used and want to stay around $35k, out the door.

15-17 5.0’s seem to be the least problematic. The 18-20 have a fair amount of oil consumption issues.

If you come across a 2.7 EcoBoost, I wouldn’t swear it off. It’s one of the most issue free engines of this generation and produces plenty of power.

That said, I’m not trying to sway you. You should get exactly what you want.

Thanks! After having the ecoboost, I missed the v8 sound I had with my '08 5.4L. Gonna have to run a Flowmaster or MBRP setup on that 5.0. I know sound might not should be a big deciding factor, but I missed it for all the years of owning the 2011 eco

For a $35k budget, you'll be higher miles for sure. I put your criteria in autotrader and in a 200 mile radius of me, damn near every one of them had close to 100K miles. I'm not saying the 5.0 is trash at that point (I have a 5.0) but I wouldn't be paying that much for 100k miles.

I've seen reports of 5.0's going 200k+ miles, but that's why I'm here getting the scoop from you guys who have more first-hand experience - if 100k miles is too much to purchase a truck with, I'll have to save more and get in one with lower mileage.

I think it comes down to what you’re looking for too. If you’d be ok with more of a high trim xl / XLT, you could get a much lower mileage truck.

I bought my 2017 2.7 eco 4x4 last fall with 40k miles on it for around $30k. To me, lower miles were first. It has all the power options, fog lights, chrome bumpers, alloy wheels, tow package, etc and was all I needed.

If the leather, heated seats are really important, that’ll definitely be of a much higher trim and higher price, with also much higher miles.

I'm not saying 100K miles is too many miles, just in this market I wouldn't spend that much money on a truck with 100k miles. Last summer I got a 2019 5.0 FX4 Crewcab XLT 302A (which has black cloth, but heated seats, no chrome) which was exactly what I was looking for. It had 16k miles when I got it. I paid $44k which was too much, but we are not living in 2019 anymore. You are looking at a Lariat because of the leather. You could easily look for a XLT 302A and do a leather swap if you're deadset on having leather, and probably get alot less miles for your money.

I bought my 2017 5.0 Lariet SCREW 4X4 with 63K on it back in Jan of 2020 & have been very happy with it. The MSRP (New) was $58,450 & I paid $32,031 out the door from a dealer
Other than some VCT issues it has been flawless & does not consume any oil.
The critical thing on the 5.0 is the oil. Make sure it has been changed regularly. After dealing with my VCT issues my opinion is stick with Ford 5W-20 Ford Synthetic Blend & filter.
If the oil change history is unknown I would be wary & look under the oil cap to determine if there is excessive tarnish buildup. Maybe even send an oil sample to BlackStone.
Also, I prefer the 6-speed over the 10-Speed.
Don’t believe anything the dealer says about all the services they perform. More than likely all they did was give it a wash and throw some fresheners under the seat. It took me awhile to find those suckers!

Thanks for the tips on checking the oil cap!
