Key programing
I bought a key online for my 2016 xlt. With my 2011 I programmed extra keys by using 2 keys already programed to the truck. The keys usually come with instructions but this one said to bring it to the dealer or an automotive locksmith. Can you still program them yourself? This is the key I bought thanks

I have the keyless ignition in mine and was told over and over that I needed to reprogram the keys at the dealership...and after reading online, it took me less than 2 minutes to program 2 additional keys.
Do a search in the forum for PATS key programming and I'm sure something will come up. I thought it was something as simple as putting the 1st key in to the on position, wait 5 seconds, 2nd key in the on position, wait 5 seconds, then do it with the new key....turn it off and it should be reprogrammed. I thought I saw that somewhere at least.
Is that a transponder key? It looks like the key for the door only that I received with my keyless ignition...

Yes it's a transponder key, I walked into a locksmith today and asked them to cut it for me. They told me $49.95 to cut it. I'll be checking around for other options

Yeah....that's a little crazy. I walked in to get my backup blanks cut for inside my fobs...the guy charged me $15/key. I thought that was high....

That looks familiar. I got one for my 2015 XLT as well. The dealer charged me $25 to have it cut and I programmed it myself. Took about 25 seconds.
You have to have both original keys to program the new one. The manual should outline how to do it, but what you want to do is insert the first original key into the ignition, turn it to run, wait 6 seconds (at least 3 secs, but no more than 10 secs), turn it to off and remove the key. Then insert the 2nd original key, turn it to run and wait 6 seconds before turning it to off and removing it. Then lastly put in the new key that you want programmed, turn it to run and wait 6 seconds. The locks will cycle telling you that programming of the new key was successful.
But before you do all that you have to have your new key copied.

I contacted 2 different locksmiths in my area, one wanted $50 the other wanted $35. I stopped by a local Ford dealer and they cut it for free. I guess I should have started here first

Page 72-73 or the 2016 owners manual has the instructions for programming your own key. To do it yourself, it requires you have at least two functional keys. If you only have one of the key fobs, you will have to take it to a dealer or locksmith that has the correct Ford programmer box.
