Default Keeping the spare tire lock functioning

What do you use to keep the lock cylinder from rusting up over time? Being in the rear bumper and entirely exposed, the road salt in the winter really plays havoc with these. On my 2005, it got so bad I thought I was going to have to cut it out at one point.

sounds silly but don't knock it till you try it, Condom over back side behind bumper. Also works to keep rain water out of rifle barrel.

I think I opened the flap to look at mine and there's like Vaseline all over the surface of it. Not sure if there's anything inside the slot. Sounds to me like something that leaves a coating and fills a space will be best. So Vaseline sounds perfect - or some type of dielectric grease.

So on the keyless trucks, I'm assuming it's the physical key hidden inside the fob?

You should have also been given a normal key for you door lock. It will work also.

My key fob key is also my door lock key, I didn't receive any other keys.
