Default IWE?

Question for the mechanics. I think that I have a IWE that needs replaced. I have replaced the check valve, solenoid and hub assembly. I still have a rotational humming noise at around 40 mph and above. I unplugged the wiring harness to the 4x4 solenoid, which should engage the IWE to the hub. With the solenoid unplugged there is no noise. My first question is, this would mean the IWE is bad and needs replaced, correct? Secondly, is it ok to drive with the solenoid unplugged, until I get some decent weather to replace the IWE?

Here are a couple active conversations related to your questions

All of what you are asking was talking about within the past 3 days in great detail.

Sounds like you have an IWE failing.
I am becoming more confident my noise is IWE, despite the sound not being the typical sound I'd imagine an IWE is making.
I've tested the IWE system in detail and all test pass. Noise persists.....still can't be sure.
In my case I fear it is time for a visual inspection.

This image shows the IWE still on the end of the half-shaft and with the knuckle removed.

You're fine pulling the power on the solenoid and driving, or, throw it into 4A if you have it, and drive.
Don't know anything about your truck, so this is a generic answer.

Not to highjack this thread but since I bought my 15 I have noticed a very faint tapping sound at around 35 or 40mph if I am coasting on a quiet road. If i put it in neutral and rev the sound does not rev with the engine. I am convinced it is coming from the front right wheel area. Could this be iwe related?

Could be. Could be wheel bearing. Could be CV joint. Could be a rock in the tire tread.

Definitely not a pebble-to-pavement sound... I will have the dealer check it out next week when I take it in for the water in the cab. 🙄
