Default How to keep engine running...

Did not know how to title this question. But here is what I am trying to address. I start my truck manually to warm it up and remove ice from windshield (-28 degrees outside can be a bear). While the truck runs I plow/snow blow the driveway. Usually takes 30 minutes. When I come back, the accessory power is on and the motor is off. I am not sure at what duration the engine turns off, but it is annoying.

What settings cause this and can I use Forscan to eliminate this automatic shutoff?

You can turn it off in the menu between the tacometer and seedometer. With it ON, it will stay running 30 mins

Go to:
SETTINGS/VEHICLE/A. ENGINE OFF

uncheck the box

If memory serves I think the longest you can run the truck is 15 minutes. Just my two cents, but idling a frozen motor for that long is borderline torture on that poor truck.

Don't know what year your truck is. In a 2018; Owner manual page 172 gives info on auto shut-down and extending it.
You have to intervene to do the extended time.
Often I leave my truck with the engine running and a passenger for heat.
Don't remember it ever shutting down automatically but it may be because the system detects one of the functions such as a passenger in the front seat or the electric locks being operated etc.
15 minutes in my 2018 pretty much soften the windshield accumulation for clearing when the defrost and max heat and high blower speed is set for that function.
The 5L is engineered to fast heat the engine first with the special cooling system controlled by a special Thermostat and front radiator lovers that stay closed until commanded to open.
Heat out of the vents before the temp gauge rises off cold rest is normal.
I would think your 30 minutes should be enough time to allow clearing off the windshield when you get back to the truck.
Good luck.

There are threads in the summer about this because people like to take their pets with them and leave the A/C on but with all their lollygagging around they find they leave the vehicle at idle for over 30 minutes, well up to 30 minutes before it shuts off.
The computer doesn't know if the person forgot to shut off the vehicle or if they are intentionally allowing it to run.

I do not know if there is a setting to allow the truck to idle infinitely.

May I ask why it is 'annoying'?

You may wish to install a catch can, and maybe ensure your oil change interval is not less than the preferred 5,000 miles.

Catch can people are in fear of carbon build up. A car at idle for that long, routinely, is going to suffer from greater carbon build up.
That long idle time is also on the 'severe use' side of the scale too and oil should be changed more routinely.

Thank you. I was looking under the Sync menu and it did not occur to me that it would be located in the vehicle menu options.

I have a 2017 F150 5L. I find the defrost on this truck to be not as good as the 2013 F150 3.5L I had previously. It does not reach the majority of the windshield, only the center half.
Thanks for the explanation on the operation of the thermostat and front radiator louvers.

The annoying part is that the truck is still powered on with the engine not running. So, when I am plowing snow, I glance over to see the headlights/tail lights on and assume engine is operating. Not sure why power is not shut down when the engine performs an auto shutdown. Second annoying issue is when I jump in the truck after an auto shutdown, I push the brake and hit the ignition button and it will not start. I am not sure what sequence has to happen, but after several attempts of trying to start it, I usually just use the remote start to start engine.

I drive the truck 100 miles every day, so the oil gets changed every 3000 miles.

On my mustang I think if you push the start button first without brake it will see a shut down and then restart for you on first try?

I wouldn't worry about carbon buildup if you're running a high detergent top tier fuel as recommended by Ford. I fully agree with your oil change interval.
