Hidden winch mounts
for starters my truck is a 2016 with a 5.0 so no intercooler issues. I know the only one available that i can find is from sdhq. its kinda pricey, i was wondering if anyone knows any other options. i have also seen they make them from the 2014 and under models. has anyone tried one of these on a newer truck? i wouldnt think the frames would be much different. im sure some but not drastic. possibly drill or slot some holes, idk...
After looking at all options, I'm probably going to make my own. The SDHQ design looks iffy to me. I run a hydraulic winch and the mount needs to be stronger than a simple bent up piece of 1/4" plate. I run my hydraulic to stall on a regular basis and think theirs would bend. If not permanently, it looks like it would flex enough to damage the fairlead/bumper/lights.
Comparing to the SDHQ: If you were to use a simple flat plate and space the winch up with box tubing, you would have a far stiffer design.
I'm considering making templates and having the metal water jet cut. Would guys be interested in buying just the cut metal and doing your own welding and paint? I bought a tubing bender this way and it worked out great. Kind of like IKEA for metal parts. Everything comes in a flat box. Allowed me to have a high quality tube bender for a fraction of normal price.

Once I have the cutter input the pattern, cutting more isn't much of a thing. Let me see where this goes. Seems obvious at this point that the aftermarket doesn't believe that the 5.0 has sufficient numbers to support a hidden mount on 15+ trucks. I take delivery late July and will be keeping my old truck until I work out the winch mount, so it will be a few months. Just looking at it this should be pretty simple. Another difference is I will be using a roller fairlead as I work the winch too much for a friction fairlead.
Maybe what they are worried about is mods that will be needed to access the winch for normal use. My Mile Marker has two levers on the side and I always need access at the cable mount. On my current truck I built a removable panel held on with cam-locks. We'll see what the new one needs but one thing is for sure, I will not own a truck without a hidden winch.
