Default Help with EVP Error

Hey guys I took my truck 2017 Lariat 4x4 5.0 to the shop because the engine light was on. They told me it was. the EVP purge valve and it was going to be $657 dollars to fix it. I did a quick youtube and was like there is no way Im paying them for a fix that easy. I went to AutoZone and picked one up for $35 bucks and installed it. Engine light still on. I looked around and saw possibly the Charcoal box or solenoid might be an issue too. So I bought one and replaced that and engine light is still on. I disconnected the battery and then reconnected and light was still immediately on. Any thing else I can try? Do I need to get something to clear codes maybe? I dont see anyone else talking about if the engine light stays on. Any ideas would be a great help. Thanks again guys!

Without a DTC scan you are only guessing at what the problem is. Just because you change a part, even if it is the right one, the CEL will not go out immediately. You either need to clear the code(s) or wait until the PCM conducts it next series of EVAP system tests before it is going to know that something has changed.

If you want to work on these trucks, do yourself a favour and get FORScan setup. Don't get an OBDII reader. They are next to useless.

EVAP has a very specific set of conditions that must be met before the testing will occur that would reset the light unless you manually reset it with a scanner. And it will then show up as OBD II status "not ready" until the testing is successfully completed.

Here's some light reading on the subject:

Thanks a ton guys. Really appreciate you taking the time. @52merc So what all do I need for the Forscan setup. Can you recommend what I would use for a 2017 Ford F150? Is it something I can grab off of Amazon for the adapter?

Thanks

TJ

Buy what 52 is telling you! If you buy something else (to save money) that is not recommended by FORSCAN, you will be buying again!

I know that is true from my own experience.

I had an evap code a year or so ago. I first replaced the solenoid at the top of the engine and no bueno. I then had a shop troubleshoot and replace the solenoid down by the charcoal box for a stupid $900 and it seemed to go away for a few weeks but came back. I then bought a smoke machine and found a leak at my capless fuel flap. I cleaned the flap and still no joy. I then rubbed some silicone grease around the outside of the flap where it would seal and sure enough that fixed the issue. It's been fine for at least 8 months and counting. I used a cheap Android Phone with torque pro to clear the code the first time and then the last time when I used the silicone grease although I believe the code will go away on it's own after a while.

With that all said, cleaning the fuel flap and applying some silicone grease around the sealing edges is easy to do and cheap.

There are about a dozen, more or less, evap codes possible. Without knowing the exact fault code, you're doomed to guessing and hoping to get lucky.
