Default Headlight nuts?

Been having problems with my Morimotos and have been taking them in and out a lot. Stripped both nuts on each side. Can’t figure out what kind of nut it is or how to remove/replace it. Pic attached.

It's been awhile since I did my headlights but I thought there was just capture nuts that bolts screwed into.

So on my truck there’s a screw hole and the screw threads in to the nut on the bottom. But how do I remove it and what holds it in there? I’m looking at the exploded view of that bar and it mentions the nut but I can’t visualize where it goes or how it stays there.

The hole is threaded. The nut is captured in there. The bolt just threads into it. You've likely stripped it. If you remove the bolt you may be able to chase the threads to repair it, drill it out and rethread or maybe use a slightly smaller bolt and nut that loosely fits thru it.

Or get a stripped thread repair kit off Amazon, select an insert of the proper size, insert it in the hole, and be back in business.

Yeah I think it’s just the nut that’s screwed. The 10 mils seat but don’t thread in. Gonna try thread repair

Hello all

An update on this for people here and those who may find their way here.

You don’t have to “fix” the threads on the two retainer holes that fasten your 15-17 headlights (and maybe beyond) in. The nuts are plastic and fit into a square hole (there are only threads on the plastic nuts). Here’s the steps I took.

1 - undo all fasteners holding headlight in
2 remove bottom support bracket
3 take out headlight
4 take a pair of pliers and squeeze the plastic nuts from the bottom but not too hard. You’ll push in the clips. As you push in, push upward and they’ll pop out
5 literally just pop in the new one
6 reverse order
7 remember not to over tighten!
8 do NOT yank out from the top - I made this mistake on first one. Took me 15 minutes to get it out because I crushed it. The way I did the other 3 was massively smarter literally took 15 minutes to do all 3 remaining ones!

hope this helps.

You’re welcome!

One should not use a wrench, not even a 1/4" one, to tighten these bolts. Install them with a nutdriver. Hell, tightening them down with just a socket extension is enough.
