Question HD Tow Pkg Question

What does the HD tow package consist (component wise) of that is different from the standard tow package? Heavier frame? Added leaf springs? etc.

Thanks

Front Sway Bar and Pro Backup Assist if you aren't a base model.

There is no HD tow package, there is a Max tow package along with two other lighter duty tow options. There is an HD payload package as well. This is all lined out in the brochure for the model year you are looking at. It is also called out in the Ford F150 tow guide. Do a web search and you can find it.

"Class IV Trailer Towing Hitch" = 53B Medium Duty Trailer Towing Package

"Trailer Towing Package" = 53A Heavy-Duty Trailer Towing Package

"Max Tow" = 53C Maximum Trailer Towing Package

"Heavy-Duty Payload Package" = HPP

"2.7 Payload Package" = 2.7PP

I wish Ford was consistent with the names but they are not. Varies from window sticker to owner's manual to ETIS to RV&Trailer Tow Guide.

53A HD Tow Package adds (over 53B Hitch) = Pro Trailer Backup Assist, LED Trailer Hookup Light and Solid Front Swaybar.

53C Max Tow adds (over 53A) = 36 gal fuel tank, Brake Controller, Higher Rating Hitch and Bumper Section, 3.55 Gears and Locking Rear Axle.

On a 3.5EB the 53B already has the brushless fan motors and high output fans. On at least some 5.0 V8 it doesn't. It's possible the 53A HD Tow doesn't either. You will need to compare side by side.

It appears in at least some applications Max Tow and HD Tow may get a different radiator than the 53B Hitch Trucks. Although the RV & Tow Guide would lead you to believe otherwise. It's possible the Max Tow and HD Towing may use different radiators depending on exact package. IE HPP may get a different radiator.

18 Screw 145 4x4 3.5EB (Non-Limited)
53B - 7,000 Towing
53A - 10700 Towing
53C (17" & 18" Wheels) - 12200 Towing
53C (20" Wheels) - 12700 Towing

On my FX4 it has the 7K GVWR package, the pro back up assist, large front swaybar, the hitch is rated on its sticker at 500# tongue, 5000# tow or Weight Dist hitch 1160# tongue 11600# tow. I take those as whats max loaded weight. You still have to stay within the GCWR is my understanding on what you can actually tow.

That's the hitch rating. Not the truck rating. A Regular Cab 4x2 3.3L 3.55 with the 53B Class IV Hitch has the same sticker. That only applies to your truck if you have a Screw 157 4x4 5.0 53A 3.73.

There's a youtube video where a guy changes out his f150 factory hitch for the higher rated hitch for what that's worth.
