That's a real good way to bend your tailgate, learned that one the hard way at my first construction job as a kid my boss sure was mad. You didn't have much weight, but if those were 34 - 2x10's it's a different story.

With the tailgate down a 5.5' bed is almost 8' long so no issue hauling just 10' lumber. Getting to the longer lengths can be interesting though, I always put the stiffest lumber on bottom and work up to the light 2x4's.
