Default Hard Shifting

Hello Internet,

is anyone experiencing their trucks shifting hard after start up? I have the 2.7L 10 speed. I always warm it up before driving but it shifts hard from 1st to 3rd or it will shift hard from 2nd to 4th, but only after initially driving the vehicle for the day. Any ideas or answers as to why this might be happening? Feel free to ask me more questions as well.

What year? There are two or three TSB's out for reflashing earlier 10 speeds due to "harsh shifting" and other quirks.

I have had hard shift into drive, the clunk, the hard downshift on interstate, and most recently feeling like the transmission goes into neutral while driving with cruise control on, then it catches and takes back off after loosing 10mph. It happens mostly when I am towing.

The fix....well, there isn't one if your truck was built after (I believe) May of 2018. Mine was built in 08/2018. I have cleared the adaptive shifting tables twice. Didn't help.

In the end, this is a software problem that Ford refers to as "normal behavior". There is nothing normal about it, but you can take it into the dealer and let a mechanic drive your truck like a rental for a few days just to have the problem on record. But even if they duplicate the problem, there is no fix to date.

How would you define "hard"? What do you mean by "but only after initially driving the vehicle for the day"?

My 2019 3.5, on the first shift of the drive...shifts very hard into 4th or 5th. Once it does this the rest of the drive is fine...But I'd say it does this on like 60% of drives. Dealer flashed transmission and did an update but it did nothing.

This will happen every time if you don't let the engine run til it revs down.

I've heard others say that but that makes no difference in my case.

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes then driving it hard for a week or so. Don't be afraid to get on it. You won't hurt the transmission or the engine.
It should smooth out in a few days and shift smooth from then on.
