Default "Front Camera Malfunction" Pre collision issues.

Background:

2020 F150 SCrew 4x4 STX 45K

12/21 @ 35K Rock hit bottom of windshield. Got it epoxied. Still ended up cracking after the first wet freeze in 1/22. Crack is horizontal running the whole length of the bottom of the windshield. pretty much no higher than the windshield wipers are in resting position.

End of 1/22 @ 40K - Install a 3" lift and put 35"s.

3/18/22 @ 45K - Every time I start the truck I get two alert messages. "Front Camera Malfunction Service Required" and "Pre-Collision" Assist Not Available".

Cleaned windshield with no change.

So, I have read that this alert could come from a defective windshield delaminating where the camera was, or it could be from the lift and needs to be realigned. (but wouldn't it have done it 2 months ago when the lift was installed if that was the case?) or it needs a new camera. Looks like regardless of the situation I would have no warranty assistance. which means I am going to have to front the whole bill. A new OEM windshield from the dealership is $460 + tax, plus $120-$160 for install, and if a calibration is needed another $150, in which I hope that includes realignment as well if needed?
Or Juans Auto Glass in Houston, (which I have used a few times before and was always happy with the work) quoted $250 for a aftermarket installed but they do not calibrate. So if still needed I would need go back to the dealership and just pay the $150.

If the problem still persists after all that they will replace the camera. Which I have no idea what the cost is for that....

Chime in folks with any experience with these issues please.

I have a crack that goes from one side of the window to the other, just about where the wipers rest. Sounds about like yours. No problems with the IPMA functions. The current windshield is an aftermarket (non-Ford) and the installers calibrated the camera after install.

Calgary is brutal on windshields.

Hello there. Would you please send over a private message with your VIN and the name/location of your local Ford dealer? I would like to look into these warning messages your truck is receiving on my end.

I had something similar with my truck, also a 2020, and posted my results in the forums. Long story short, it turned out to be a defective windshield that had a “wave” in the glass near the camera. You could literally see it from the side profile. I also had a level and did not have any issues for nearly 10 months. But that was the first place the dealership looked when I brought it in for the issue.

Ended up with a new OEM windshield and have not had a problem ever since. I think glass, whether OEM or aftermarket, will solve your issue. My theory is there was a batch of bad windshields on the 2020s, as that is the only year I have seen with this issue.

Update: Replaced the windshield with a aftermarket one and no change, same problem. So im assuming it has to be a issue with the camera itself or wiring. So I guess off to the stealership I go after I get back from being out of the country...

Ok now this thing just braked on me for no reason on a back road this weekend. It was like a quick pump of the brakes, no alarm or alert and my foot was not on the brake pedal. Is this a culprit of the the camera having issues and active braking activating? This has me worried to drive it.

Update. Stealership says my camera is bad and I will have a bill just shy of $700. Pretty ridiculous for a vehicle that cost as much as it did and as new as it is. I get I'm out of the 3/36k warranty in terms of mileage. But wear does a camera have from mileage? Its less than 2 years old. I feel as if ford should make it right.

I was going to say that the camera is on the grill and has nothing to do with the windshield (at least it is on my 2018). Must have gotten hit with something or malfunctioned due to water intrusion or something like that. Sorry to hear that's what it costs to fix.
