Ford Pass is an app that anyone can use.

Sync 3 is an in-vehicle system that does some neat things.

Sync Connect, a SEPARATE FEATURE, allows Ford Pass to communicate with the vehicle and remote start, etc. And, as noted, didn't come with vehicles until 2017.

Sync Connect is a separate option. If you didn't buy a vehicle with Sync Connect (it would be listed separately), then you don't have it.

A 2016 owner can add Ford's previous remote start and enable it with FORScan, or wait for the newer product coming "Summer of 2017". Yes, we know that already ended and it didn't come out...

Sync Connect was not available on 2016s. That is why you don't get the command and control options in Ford Pass.

What parts are required to add "sync connect" to a 2016 sync3 truck. Just wondering?

There are none in existence. Ford announced that "this summer" they would release a product for vehicles that didn't have it from the factory. That has not yet happened. Price totally unknown.

hmm. i thought i read somewhere it was a some type of cellular modem that connects into the sync 3 unit? The 16s and 17s are almost identical. What part does the 17s have that the 16 does not?

I have a 2017 XLT with remote start, SYNC 3, SYNC Connect and I can lock/unlock remotely as well as start it remotely.

I am using a Samsung S7 Android.

He already said it was a 2016, and he was told why it doesn't do anything else...

I would not assume that the 2016s are identical except for the cellular modem. There are other difference too. Like the antenna/gps receiver on the roof. The wiring for that antenna. And even the Sync 3 head unit may not have the support for the cellular modem.

Smartlink is a PID that goes into the OBDII port, and Ford is currently working to bring it to market. HW should be about $100, but will require a monthly data plan to operate (and maybe a subscription fee too). As Ricktwuck said, it was announced for summer, but has been delayed.
