Default Ford.com Sync update failure

I first tried connecting the truck to my home WiFi. I clicked “Scan for updates” and the circle popped up as if it was scanning. However, after a minute or two it stopped scanning and didn’t tell me anything. No notification of any kind. I can only assume the WiFi signal wasn’t strong enough. Also, I don’t have any info on the “last checked for updates” date.

I logged into my account on Ford.com and went to the Sync update page and clicked “Check for updates,” and received the following error message:

“Oops! Something went wrong on our end. A message has been sent to our support team, please try again later.”

I guess I’m going to just stick with 3.3 for now. Maybe it’ll work soon. I did find the long thread with the flowchart, but I’d rather not attempt that, as I’m not that confident in my own tech skills.

I think the wifi updates are nearly impossible to have it download and complete. Not to mention the amount of time the engine needs to be running.

If you want an official update from Ford, try the USB method from their website instead. There is also the Sync 3.4 thread here you saw, or Cyanlabs tool that will prepare a flash drive for 3.4 update.

Thanks. I was trying the USB method when I received the error mentioned in the first post.

The Ford WiFi method doesn’t require the engine to be running according to this from Ford.

Ford Sync WiFi instructions

That said, it seems most people have issues with getting the WiFi update to work.

I've come to the conclusion, after reading numerous threads on the subject and trying myself, that it's mostly a matter of owner impatience. Your vehicle WiFi times out a half hour after parking, and it probably doesn't have a strong WiFi signal out in the garage or driveway, and the system has to take the updates and install them while you're driving with the engine running, so it takes a lot longer to accomplish than a manual update. Depending how often you drive it can take days or a few weeks. Automatic WiFi updates aren't critical so it doesn't matter if they take a while, but if you're waiting on one you know is coming, it seems like forever.

WiFi update doesn't require the engine to be running, but it will time out. The WiFi is not on all the time when your engine is off. The thumb drive method requires the engine to be running so the installation doesn't get interrupted.

And if the WiFi download is interrupted it starts over... the overall system for updates is poor. I have a 200mbit+ WiFi signal in my garage and it was absolutely crawling on the download. I gave up.

It does not start over if WiFi is interrupted (you can see this from the download status bar on the Automatic Updates screen), but it takes large files a very long time to download. Like I said, the primary disadvantage with the WiFi download is owner impatience. If we didn't know it was downloading something, we wouldn't care how long it took.

Questions if you have experience with the WiFi process…

1. Why would my 3.0 Sync not tell me when the last “check for updates” was? I’ve watched videos. Normally that info is at the bottom of the “Automatic System Updates” menu, but I have nothing.

2. Once the scan for updates is finished, will the system tell me “Update found” or “Installation started” or anything at all? Because I don’t get anything. It’s scanning…then it stops scanning and I don’t get a notification at all of what the scan results were (but I know I need an update).

Pretty frustrating for sure.

Right, but it can't download in the background with the truck off. And from what I could tell it would be interrupted and have to start over entirely (not resume). So it is also not easy to allow it to correctly finish.

The whole process to update my maps last year in my 2020 Lariat over WIFI took days for it to complete, but it eventually updated.

Ford often does system updates on the weekends and things don't always work. Check for the update online again today. You have a 19, I hope your are running 3.2, 3.3 or 3.4. 3.0 is for 16-18s and if it truly has 3.0 in it, Someone swapped APIMs and put the wrong one in.
