That's about 1,000 gallons which would have netted you 17,000 miles at 17mpg X 1,000 gallons. So that's the approximate opportunity cost.

So if you can average 3mpg better than the 2.7 then to regain the advantage then 17,000 / 3mpg = 5,666 gallons of gas which is gonna be about 250-270 full tank refills which at once a week or two that's 5-11 years of ownership. Or 5,666gal X 20mpg = 113,320 miles of total driving.

Wouldn't this be like burning down the house to kill a mouse?
Exactly! !! Plus that dodge will have many problems before then that will cost money. In the end the dodge won't be worth near what the ford will be worth. Plus now he has to drive 113k miles in a slow turd. To the OP, you are a brilliant guy!

^^^^ What a dumb *** statement.
Also many states have tax credit towards a new vehicle. You only pay the difference between the 2 vehicles. No difference=No tax

disappointing to hear about so many problems!!! Wanted to at least share something positive... I've now owned 4 F150's... a 2002, 2004, 2007 and now a 2015.

My 2.7L Lariat, 2WD now has 11,000 miles on it and i've had ZERO issues with it. I'm also averaging 21 MPG in mixed driving - and that's with 20" wheels/tires on it as well... so far, I've really been impressed with the reliability, the way it drives and certainly the way it looks.. Consumer reports also gave it the best scores it could have gotten on reliability - Chevy nor Ram came close to ford in that section on the 2015's!

It seems FCA had some production issues with certain late 2014 early 2015 engines when they were ramping up production to meet demand causing some early engine failures.

Check around with dealers and some will throw in a few free oil changes with purchase and offer discounts when you pre purchase oil changes from them, considerably lowering costs.

Speculation going around now is that he is getting a Titan HD.
My post is not an indictment of the Ram 1500, but rather the choice of the diesel powerplant. If you are going to be towing ante up for the 2500 and HD running gear, frame, etc. If you are going to go with a 1/2 ton I don't think the diesel option is financially viable from maintenance, and in this case longevity.

I think the ownership costs of the 5.7 hemi, 5.3 GM, 5.0 Ford or either Ecoboost engine choice financially beats the Ecodiesel hands down. As stated, regardless of brand or engine no one is going to get Prius mileage with a full size truck. If you like the smell of new car and diesel (at least in this case) it's your money, but it isn't going to make financial sense. Lots of things don't make financial sense; that's okay; to each his own.

As for "free" oil change; I'm not sure there is any such thing. They may call them free or sell them at a reduced price, but I guarantee you pay for them in some sort of fashion.

To the OP I hope your Ram is outstanding and you enjoy her.

Good Luck OP. I have a good friend that has all diesel fleet for their construction company. They have run a few of the eco diesels over the last year and have had good luck and incredible mileage. they do use the hell out of them and are happy. they have dodge, chevy, and ford trucks- half ton and 3/4 ton. nothing but great reviews on them.

don't mind the hate on here... amazing how fast people turn from slamming ford trucks on this forum to backing them. I say more power to you. Get what you want you only live once.

So all the diesel 250 and 350 guys are driving slow turds also. 0 to 60 is about the same in most diesel trucks and last time I took a test drive of an EcoDiesel it would cruise easily at 80 mph and actually get good fuel mileage.

I guess he figured he would make up time with the slow diesel when he passed you spending 15 minutes while you refueled.

What a worthless statement.

I can totally understand wanting to switch to a Ram, but the diesel choice is a head scratcher. That power plant costs significantly more and performs significantly worse than the Hemi. It will take a long time to make up the initial cost burden with respect to fuel savings.

Well over 100000 miles for payback-I did the math. And that's with diesel costing the same as gas and assuming $4 fuel (which it obviously isnt right now).

People who say they are buying these things for fuel economy savings are grossly mistaken.
