Default First issue with the tuck

I have about 90k on my truck and i now have a rattle noise on start up, which goes away after a few seconds. More than likely a cam phaser. I don't know how many the 2.7 has, either 2 or 4. I dunno. Will find out something hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday. I have a video of it but it won't let me upload it right now. Will see what i can do tomorrow

So you have the ratcheting cam phaser COLD START noise on a 2.7??? If it makes the ratcheting noise when decelerating with a cold engine, it's normal. If true, this is the first time I hear a 2.7 having the cold start issue. I was under the understanding the 2.7 only has cam phasers on the intake, which are the same as the other engines (as far as I know). The problematic phasers are the ones in the exhaust of the 3.5s and 5.0s, supposedly, which are reportedly different than the intake ones. Now I'm confused. Ha ha. Maybe an expert can chime in on the differences. And sorry to hear 2.7s can also be affected. Good luck.

It was only on start up after sitting, no noise while driving. I had replaced alot of them when i worked at Mazda. Replaced several on the CX7, Mazdaspeed 3 & 6's. All FoMoCo cam phasers and am very familiar with the noise they make when they fail.

Interesting. Well, at least yours lasted for 90K miles; that's impressive. The bad news is 2.7s can also be affected. Do you know if the 2.7s have cam phasers on the intake only, or both? And are they the same as 3.5s and 5.0s? With the sheer number of trucks made, I'm starting to think it's a very small number of engines that are affected, no? Meaning only a few of us with 'bad' phasers will actually have issues, for what I can tell. But with my luck, I'll probably one of them... right out of warranty. Ha ha.

Let us know what is found, I'm interested in possible issues I may have to deal with in the future.

GL!

just did some research, the 2.7 has cam phasers on all camshafts. so it has 4 cam phasers. i hope they replace all so i dont have to come back for another failed one if they replace just the one.
