Q (Stupid) Q, are these made out of plastic or are they metal? The thought of possibly scratching the paint woke me out of a dead sleep (nightmare) sweating profusely a few times and, also, because of the size of the holes and how close they are together leaves the fender a bit flimsy. I would bet it wouldn't be too difficult to bend the space behind the badge with a bit too much pressure applied. (This comes from a guy that has over tightened a few too many bolts in his lifetime as well).
The relatively thick double sided sticky backing on the badges also add to the problems in trying to get a decent grip on the clips.
I removed my fender emblems, not fun at all. With all the tabs and clips, it is difficult to get to the adhesive between them. I used heat, fishing line (50 lb), and soft plastic pry tools. The tools got chewed up, every time they hit one of the tabs.
I am grafting my EcoBoost badge into them, painting to match the tuxedo black, and reinstalling.

They are plastic. Whenever I use them to remove emblems I put masking tape on the paint surrounding the emblem. That way the tool doesn't touch the paint. You can take one of the straight tools and push it right through where the double sided tape is, then try to release the clips with an angled tool.
Maybe in keeping with the wacky changing times, his XLT realized it should have been born a Platinum and simply identifies as such so it can use the bathroom of its choosing...
Only way to get the clips out without breaking the badge is by taking the fender wells off and anything (everything) else that will allow you to access it from the inside.
Good luck

Here is the rear of the badge, the tabs were not bad but the clips sucked!!!
you can reach them through a small gap using a very long flat head screwdriver, I tried to snake my arm in there and it got cut up from the inner fender but had my 15 year old with long skinny arms. He was pushing on the clip while I was pulling from the outside after I used fishing line and a hair dryer to get through the 2 sided tape
It can be done but like I said earlier I would not reinstall the badge with the clips just in case you ever had to remove them again
