Faster charging time
To be honest, I don't know what back-end device provides it (which is your actual question) but my 2018 does "rapid charging" with my Pixel 2 phone. But only if I use a better quality USB cable. So it's possible to get the feature but it may be more than just the hub.
I also have a 16 and use AA on a S7. I have found that if the phone is almost charged when I start using AA (from Akron OH to Chicago) it will be fully charged when I get there. If it is under 65% when I start it will still around the same when I arrive. I upgraded the USB hub to the 17s so my wife could use CarPlay. My S7 works the same as before.
I run Iheart radio and Waze during my drives. I try to close all the background Apps before I take off. I have an Apple 8 iPhone as well, I started using it more then the Samsung because it will charge while I am using CarPlay with the same Apps running on the same routes
so to answer your question, no way to use AA and have fast charging.

I also found out a good quality cable is a must.
You may also want to check what is draining your battery when hooked up.
As others have mentioned, the charge rate is not as high as when using a real high speed charger and good cord. That being said, mine still charges my phone (Samsung Galaxy S6 Active) while connected and using AA with Google maps or Waze and a music app running at the same time. Not quickly, but it charges.
So, check your cord (or swap it out for a known good one) and then check what apps are running in the background.

That said I doubt an upgraded USB would charge any faster. I don't think USB's carry that much current.
I have turned almost all of the background apps off on my S7 and it still has a hard time keeping up. Also it gets stupid hot which leads to more battery use. I have my holder in front of an air vent to keep air blowing across it.
I have a S9+ and use my factory Samsung charging cable. Typically my phone is fully charged after my ~23mile evening commute from one side of St Louis to the other. Once I'm connected (USB and Android Auto) my phone screen is off.
I've got a 2018 F150 and use a Pixel 3XL running AA and while it does charge the phone battery while running it is very very slow. I purchased a usb device online to see just how many amps the usb ports up front put out and it was only like 700mA while the phone just sat idle. I'm hoping someone comes up with a usb wifi device that allows you to run AA wireless so I can use my quick charger that is plugged in the console between the seats while running AA. I've seen wireless concepts online that show that the idea is viable just need someone to pick it up and package it smaller and start selling.
