Default Factory wheel refinishing

I just recently got a set of factory 20" sport wheels for a great deal to replace my 18" wheels. The only downside is they have a lot of clear coat peel going on. Does anyone have any experience refinishing the factory wheels? My plan is to sand, prime, paint, and re-clear coat. I'm just looking for some tips from anyone who has ever taken on a project like this. Thanks in advance.

I stripped and recleared the wheels on a Tundra I had a few years ago. Chemical stripper. Turned out really nice. Since I went back clear, I didn’t sand.

Do you happen to remember what kind of chemical stripper you used?

After sanding a bit.

first few layers of primer/filler. Used a filler primer to adhere to the rougher spots on the rims from curb rash.

After the 1st full layer (second coat)

After clear coat. I dont have any pictures of the finish product in the sun but i do have a video on my Instagram of it @405_oxi

I did 80% by hand. The clear and all wet sand was done by hand. I will warn you though let the coats cure dont rush it. I waited a few days to let the clear get cured before sanding. I would love to see how they turned out with a good polish but I got rid of them about 4 days after I was done.

I’m almost thinking about just sanding the clear down and putting on a new clear. They cleaned up pretty well.

Make sure you get a good smooth sanding or it will show through the clear.. i did it all do to curb rash. I dont know the correct clear to use with oem paint, may want to research that part to make sure you get a good stick with a long life

I think it was named Clean Strip or Ready Strip? I got it at Walmart. It did the trick.

Next try a clay bar and detailer on them before sanding.
