F150 Engine Dies without Warning!
Hi:
I have a 2016 F-150 Lariat 4x2 purchased brand new in Feb 2016 and as of July 31 2016 it has 7,700 miles on it. We use it to tow our horse trailer and for casual driving around town. So far we have had no issues with it, until last night.
Last night as we were driving home from dinner all of a sudden the engine died, and a warning message on the display said "Hill Start Assist Not Available" after clicking OK it then said "Service AdvanceTrac". At this point, pressing the gas pedal did nothing, and the truck was just coasting. Once we pulled over, I could feel the engine studdering as if it would eventually die. I turned off the engine, waited a bit, then turned it back on. We were able to drive a couple miles and then it happened again. After turning the engine off then back on again, now the check engine light is on.
This morning, I woke up and decided to plug my iPhone in and use the MyFord app to see if it would give me any diagnostics other than "check engine". Well, to my surprise the check engine light was off. So I decided to drive about 10 miles down the road to the gas station. That was a mistake.
As I was entering the highway on-ramp, the same issue last night occurred again (and had to recycle the engine off/on). I made it to the gas station, and then on the way home it happened two more times!
This time I took a video, and I uploaded it to the link below. Can someone please take a look and let me know if they have seen this before? I have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow, but after researching it sounds like they will try to replace everything they can, but the issue still persists. I'm going to have it towed to the dealer as it's too dangerous to drive.
Am I going to have to sell the truck? This is such a fantastic truck but my family's safety and lives matter more. Everyone who has had this issue takes the truck in to get a part replaced (sensor, throttle body, steering column, etc) but then eventually encounters the issue again.

Do a search here and you will find the answer. Seems to go a lot smoother at the dealer when you can tell them what's wrong instead of them trying to figure it out.
Those that have had the repair done have not had any problems since.

Thanks iDrive I appreciate the reply. I have been searching for the last hour and I have found some related threads, but due to folks' bad English, it's too difficult to read and decipher. Other threads I have found that are readable suggest that even after getting a repair made and replacing a sensor, throttle body, etc the issue reappears again - and that's what has me worried the most.
When you say "seems to go a lot smoother when you can tell them what's wrong" , do you have any suggestions as to what I can tell them tomorrow other than describing the symptoms/behavior that was experienced?

Whats interesting is in your second video where you are stopped completely the gear selector says you're in 5th gear.
Why would it be showing in 5th when you're are idling and stopped? Keep us posted what the dealer finds. I find it odd these error messages would show if in fact its a throttle body issue as others have eluded to.

Hi Community, I am following up and closing this out. Monday we took the truck up to the Ford dealer at 10am, and by 12pm it was fixed and ready to go. After describing the symptoms to the service manager he said they have received a surge of F150s and Explorers who all had to replace the throttle body. So, they replaced the throttle body and a gasket and now it drives like normal again. This was 100% covered by warranty which was amazing.
Mind you, when I brought it in there were no check engine lights on. He said the throttle body actually doesn't throw the check engine light. So the tech took it for a test drive, was able to reproduce the issue - and he said there were enough diagnostics gathered to confirm it was the throttle body.
Anyway all is well. Below are the notes from the tech hopefully this thread helps someone in the community in the future.
"tds test and roadtest during roadtest dtc p2111 set in pcm limp back to shop and diag to bad throttle body replace throttle body and gasket tech 6262 1.70 hours performed pinpoint test dv replace tb as per test. eec system diagnosis, ignition system diagnosis, recorder monitor tets"

I disagree: having this issue fixed and covered by warranty is the lowest possible metric not the highest. As in, if they didn't they would eventually have to buy the truck back.
Glad to hear it was an easy fix that the dealer nailed first try.
