The oil use problem might be fixed or greatly reduced in the 2020 year. I personally own a 2020 2.7 with 10r80 transmission and other than it being clunky it's working fine so far.
I have a 2018 with the 10r80 and it’s trash had it rebuilt at 50,000 miles and it’s still not shifting properly and has a very hard and sketchy 3rd gear fords most trash tranny by far

From my own experience I can definitely say the gen 2 coyote coupled with the 6 speed is the best combo for trouble free operation..
My 17 5.0 6 speed and 36 gal tank has been a dream to own and maintain.
No plastic oil pan, no auto start stop,
The 9.75 rear end with max tow package has been great too with trailer back up assist.
Sync 3 has been excellent too..
Only things you’ll want upgrade are the brakes, shocks, and tires… All elective but recommend..
My only issues have been a sticky hood latch, and a broken sunroof repaired under warranty that I now religiously lube with krytox..

I just put new rims and tires on her too..

295 60 r20 +1 offset 9” wide rim.. Fox 2.0 shocks all around BDS upper control arms, Z36 Extreme brakes

Hope I don't jinx myself... My 2015 5.0L has 117k miles on the clock and looks and runs like it just came out of the showroom. I do full syn oil changes way more frequently than needed; just had trans fluid changed again yesterday (pan drop and new filter). I hope to get many more years out of this truck.

Wanted to ask you guys what are the best years I should be looking at? What is common mileage the 5.0 engines live to? What are the issues I should be aware of, avoid, etc.
I have a 2016 5.0 F-150 and as of today it has 192,610 miles. I haven’t really had any problems aside from one freak accident and regular wear items. In November 2022, I was driving through a storm with 4-Auto on and it decided to try to switch into 4WD while I was going 70MPH. Shredded my passenger side axle half shaft, but the price wasn’t that bad. Other than that, I had to replace my starter at 160K, the factory battery in January 2023, and spark plugs in December 2023. Everything else? Regular fluid changes and brake pad changes. Ford electronics are a little finicky, so don’t be surprised if luxury features go out on you. My driver side daytime running light, heat/ventilated seat, speaker chime, and both auto running boards don’t work, but I don’t want to fork out the money for something that doesn’t necessarily inconvenience me.

My dad’s 2015 5.0 lost 4th gear towing his trailer up a hill at 217k, but he’s been regularly towing a trailer that’s at just about the tow capacity of the truck in the hills of Oregon for about as long as he’s had it. Otherwise, he hasn’t had any notable mechanical problems either.

Overall, I’d say this generation F-150 is a relatively safe choice for someone looking for longevity.

Thank you guys for all the input. We got my boy a 2015 Supercab XLT 4x4, 5.0, 3.31 axle, with 96,xxx miles. He's already put Bilstein 5100's on and leveld it, and got a set of 18" OEM machined aluminum take-off wheels yesterday. Now the search begins for light 34" tall tires.

Still gotta change the axle/T-case fluids, install Lube-Locker rear axle gasket, and fluidfilm the undercarriage in the next week or two.
