Engine Options
I was just wondering about your opinions on engine options. I have a 2013 F150 5.0L with 187,000 miles on it. The only repairs I did was a water pump and brakes once, until last week when i lost compression in cylinder 4 and was told I need to replace the engine ($11K) or fix the heads (5K). I've started at looking buying something else and have found a few trucks.
A 2016 with 2.7L and a 2017 with 2.7L. Are these engines the same or was something changed between years? Is there a year of engine I should stay away from? Should I stick with a 5.0L? I put on about 62,000 miles a year. 50% highway, 50% gravel/greasy oil patch lease roads. Will never tow anything.
Any opinions are appreciated.

You are going to get positive opinions about every configuration from members on this forum. The 5.0 has treated you well and you didn't mention any concerns regarding gas mileage. It sounds to me like you could stay with the 5.0 unless a test drive convinces you otherwise. For the record I have a 2.7 and drive about 25,000 a year and am very happy with it. I do not tow but carry heavy loads at times. The 2.7 does well with 1,500 lbs on mostly flat terrain.

Has your 5.0 overheated before? I would stay with the 5.0

It did overheat this fall when I had to change the water pump. Of course it was 1am, coming home from a job, in the middle of nowhere, with no cell service. Overheated and limped it for about 5-10 miles till I could get a call out and get towed home.
The '16 has about 19,000mi on it for $30k. The '17 has about 1900mi on it for $35k. Basically the same for upgrades ('16 has a few more) but like my old man used to say. Chrome, don't get you home. I need comfort but don't need to be beating a Lariat or King Ranch to death in the oilpatch, not to mention the 3 stinky Bulldogs that come everywhere with me, haha.
I'm not stuck on any engine, was more or less seeing if there are any major problems that can come up with the 2.7. The 5'er has treated me well (except for this major injury). I have a 2500 GMC I use for towing or hauling. Reliability and gas mileage are my biggest concerns.

That's probably when the damage was done that caused your loss of compression.
