Default Engine doesn’t start right away

I’ve had a couple errors pop up and it seems to be causing the engine to not start on the first crank of the day. It will normally take me 3-6 attempts to start the truck before it will actually start but it sometimes starts right up. The errors are: Blind Spit Detection with Cross Traffic(The aide obstacle detection control module has received invalid data from the transmission control module) and Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power(Illuminates when the system has detected a powertrain or a four wheel drive fault). Any idea what is going on and why the engine will not start?

Since you have provided no information about your truck, it will be hard to suggest anything other that a weak battery as Mr. Wicked has suggested. A weak battery will allow the voltage to drop too low during the crank cycle. This causes some of the modules to boot up slower than normal and not transmit communications to other modules in the time allotted, resulting in odd error messages. You should perform a load test your battery. If it tests good, then put a smart charger on it overnight.

I apologize but I’m not a ‘techy’ person. What information is needed? The original battery has been replaced and is about 1.5 years old. I did find another message in the Sync app.

The transmission control module has detected an electrical
fault with the transmission gear position sensor and its
associated wiring. This can result in the vehicle not
cranking when the key is turned to the start position or the
Start/Stop button (if equipped) is depressed. Additional
alerts that may contain additional information may
accompany this alert.

Truck info like the following is essential for someone to help in diagnosis:
  • Model year
  • Engine
  • Option level
  • Mileage
  • Driving habits (i.e.: short trips, mostly highway miles)
  • Performed maintenance including previously repaired problems
  • Aftermarket modifications
  • Geographic location

Transmission Gear selection is not being provided to the PCM, so BLIS/CTA can not function correctly and I would guess the PCM needs to know what gear is selected in order to start properly.

Could be the a problem with the transmission selector cable being slightly out of adjustment.

IF repeat IF the issue is with the selector cable AND you have a problem with the cable bushing, this may help.

You might learn more by using Forscan to pull the detailed DTCs. The gear position sensor seems like a good clue.
