Default Engine Boost (Gauge)

Was reading the thread on octane for the 3.5HO and one user mentioned that on the premium stuff, their boost gauge showed full boost but on regular it did not. On my '16 (3.5 Eco), I only ever saw the boost hit a little over half (about 60%) pulling my enclosed sled trailer up a long hill. What is everyone else seeing? Just wondering if I am missing something here.

It will be nice to see the boost, but they eliminated it from the 2019 XLT. I don't have the feature. I have been curious as to when the boost kicks in, half throttle, anywhere in between, or floor it?

I think it was only available on the larger gauge clusters - my '16 302A doesn't have it.

It doesn't take much to get into some boost. It's progressive, much like watching the tach. But if you feather foot it on level ground like grandma you can do a lot without boost.

I'll wager that if you put your productivity display to instant fuel mileage it will give you an idea, when the instant mileage drops you're probably getting into boost lol

On regular I see about 17psi boost before it shifts (in tow haul mode). On premium it holds out longer to 19psi. This is towing my 7000lb camper.

On my truck, it takes quite a bit of throttle to get into boost, but it's not always the same. I expected sport mode to provide more boost, but it doesn't. That's why the engine doesn't feel like a typical turbo, where you can feel the push even at light throttle. In lower gears, you need a significant amount of throttle to get into it, so it's not linear at all. On higher gears, it kicks in sooner. By the way, my turbo gauge doesn't show numbers, even with the FORScan mode, so don't know how many PSIs it's pushing. Is the max 19?

Torque targets.

on 87 the truck will run less timing but more boost to try to hit the power requested.

on 93 it will run more timing and not need the boost.

It sounds like you are monitoring with something in addition to the stock gauge in the dash. On the dash are you seeing a higher 'value' (percentage of the guage filled in) with Premium vs. Regular when under boost? It seems like the truck knows it can advance the timing and perhaps give more boost but does the gauge show it? Like I mentioned, mine would go a bot over half but no more - I never ran premium though.

I’m using the stock gauge on my Lariat. The left side is 0 and the right side is 20 so one can only assume the middle is 10? With regular it gets about 3/4 of the way to 20 and with premium it’s about 9/10 of the way.

You have full boost available in all modes, but in regular or towing modes you get a lot less throttle in the first 1/3 of the pedal range. The modes impact throttle behavior and transmission strategy.
