Default Electronic Tailgate Opening

So I've had my 15 since last Monday and I've run into an issue a couple times where I went to open the tailgate and it wouldn't open, so I would walk back up and grab my key fob out of the counsel and hit the button on there to open it. It happened last night again so I was curious as to whether I had a defective hand or something but when I look in the manual this is what is says:

"Unlock the vehicle with the remote control or power door unlock control. If an intelligent access transmitter is within 3 feet (1 meter) of the tailgate, the tailgate will unlock when you press the tailgate release button."

Does this mean I have to have my key fob with me when I am in back of the pickup and want to open the tailgate? When I look back, the instances that it wouldn't open is when I've left it running with the key fob on the counsel. If this is the case, this is a major inconvenience.

But I can obviously get back into the truck without having to unlock it.....or is that an issue with just the driver's door being unlocked??

I don't have my 15 yet, but in my 04 the drivers door unlocks when you open it from the inside. It doesn't unlock anything else.

That's probably the same as this then. I haven't needed to open any of the other doors yet I guess. I wonder if that's a setting I can change....

tailgate is same as rear doors and passenger door. You can change setting so when engine is shut off ALL doors unlock. Factory default is that only driver door automatically unlocks when engine shut off.

So can you turn the tailgate lock off somehow? Unless you have a cover on, a locking tailgate seems pointless. Am I missing something here? I'm not concerned about someone stealing my tailgate.

You'll be concerned about it when someone does. One major reason tailgates lock now is to prevent someone from stealing them!

If I am remembering correctly (don't have access to manual right now) the tailgate is tied to the rear doors. They all do the same thing at the same time. If you want rear doors to unlock with one push of fob then so will tailgate. When you click fob to lock rear doors, tailgate will also lock... etc.
