Default Electronic TAILGATE keeps opening

Hi All,

I'm sure some of you have experienced this, as I did a google and there are some erratic reports.

Basically my Electronic Tailgate on my Lariat will just open it self. Apparently the F250+ have this issue and there is some investigation going on.

Basically I can close it, and it just opens sometimes. Or, I park it and BOOM it opens, or I come out in the morning and YUP it's open again.

NO it's not the key FOB. Sometimes when I open it, and its lowered, the lock actuator keeps working like it's opening again.

The Electronic button on the outside sometimes doesn't work, so I only use the remote now.

Any one have any insight? Truck is way over warranty now.

THanks

YEGdude

Yep, had the exact same issue. Dealer found the tailgate switch was defective and replaced it. No issues since.

How far out of warranty? I'd go ask the dealer and see if they'll work with you since it's becoming a somewhat known issue.

If this is the part, it is cheap.

There was another member with this same problem and it ended up being the wiring harness for the tailgate having a short. I would check that before taking the tailgate handle apart since it might be visible.

Just looping back on this, ordered a tailgate switch from Rockauto, R/R, and voila all good now!

I will see the tailgate handle was chalk full of MUD when I pulled it apart (Spent a lot of time on Mountain Roads).

Nice, I was going to say something based on your reports.

You started that the switch at the tailgate wasn't working at times. I'd have to guess that the switch was in a state where you press it to unlock....and wouldn't 'switch'. It was just always in 'open' mode. Thats why it would not latch.
Glad it's sorted.
Curious now if you clean up the muddy switch, will it function again. Could be as simple as the connection was poorly made due to corrosion.
If possible, clean it up and reinstall to test. If so, you've got a spare just in case you ever need it.
