A turbo is exhaust driven by definition, this is a turbo engine with a leaf blower for the bottom end lag.

There are 2 emerging technologies in this realm: electric superchargers combined with conventional turbos (what this article refers to) and hybrid electric turbochargers (have an electric motor connected to the shaft of the turbo that can either absorb or provide power, as needed, as used in Formula 1 cars). I think both are a waste of time and money for road cars. If you're going through all the trouble to add a high voltage system, you might as well just go all the way and put the electric energy to the axle with an electric motor.

2017 3.5 Ecoboosts have electronic wastegates to cut down on turbo lag. However the Ecoboost turbos are so small that turbo lag was pretty much non-existant anyway. Drive by wire throttle lag is another issue.

Yeah, that's why I think these devices are a waste. In a lot of situations where you want more transient response the engine is knock limited anyway, so cramming more air in won't help. Besides, having an e-supercharger doesn't completely eliminate lag anyway, as you still have to pressurize all of the charge piping and intercooler.

Please Ford, don't waste your time and our money on this.

My bet says they won't.

Agreed. I think a lot of people think the EBs have considerable turbo lag and I don't think that's the case as much as it is drive by wire. Hence why those PeddleMax devices make such a difference.

If people complain with the EB's have turbo lag they haven't experienced real turbo lag. Drive a diesel with a manual transmission to understand what the turbo lag is all about. LOL

Why would you not want to take advantage of this technology? Bridging the gap between the benefits of a all electric power plant and a gas/diesel.
