Easy lower tailgate.
So this afternoon I installed the internal assembly behind the tail light so I get the easy lower tailgate. I have run into a few problems.
One, when I let the gate down is slowly and silently lowers like it should. Then the last two inches it just drops. I'm not sure if this is normal. It's not a hard drop, but I just want to make sure if everyone else's truck does this.
Two, this is a real problem. There is about an eighth inch of lateral play in the gate now. I know that's nothing but it's a whole lot more then it was before. The concern it that when I let the gate down it likes to bias the passenger side the full eighth inch. Which in turn makes the bottom vertical edge of the gate rub the gate hinge bolt. After a few times of trying my new cool guy gate and before I realized it. This mishap had taken the paint off the edge all the way to the metal.
Am I missing something, an adjustment or a special passenger hinge? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As for #1, that last inch or two yes slams pretty fast. I think they are all that way.
As far as #2, I didn't have that issue, so I cannot say what could be causing it. I assume you installed the new hinge in the exact same position as the old one?

Yeah I put it back in place, at least as close to the first one as I could. I will most likely put a dial-indicator on it to get a base live. Then put a washer of a similar thickness in the hinge before the tail gate.
Nope, still there. I put my dial-indicator on it and found it to be .062 of deflection. Doesn't sound like much but it's enough to make it rub. I wonder if the easy down gate require two unique hinges. At this point I'm probably going to put a washer of the appropriate thickness inside that plastic cup and call it a day.
Mine does the same the last couple of inches after I installed it. Mine however does not rub or have any additional play. Sorry to hear about your problems, but the easy lower tailgate is a lifesaver for my wife and kids, who before install, dropped the tailgate on their heads and chests a few times. And yes, they're obviously slow learners.
